The vast majority of women that you have featured in this article do NOT have natural hair. Many of them have full curls that have been set in some way, and a few have on pieces or have an untraditional style. Even Solange is wearing pieces in a few photos. Miss Badu is wearing long straight extensions that are not her hair, whatsoever. Either way, only about three or four of them, including Esperanza are wearing their actual texture. It is important to show natural hair the way it grows out of our heads and NOT the way we WISH it would grow out of our heads. There is an enormous difference between what can be done with curl rods and hpieces and our own natural curly, kinky shrinkage. The more you manage expectations and atune women to the beauty of the kink, the better off we all shall be.
Agreed!
I feel like you’re sparking the divisive argument of what/who is natural and what/who is not by saying that these women do not have natural hair. To me, as long as you don’t put chemicals in your hair to change your hair pattern, then you’re natural. I understand what you’re saying about how people should embrace their natural curl pattern, BUT from what I’ve seen a lot of natural hair vloggers wear extensions from time to time. And I can appreciate that because it shows how versatile natural hair is. We’ve seen AfricanExport wear her wigs. We’ve seen NUMEROUS natural hair vloggers use curl formers. And Erykah Badu’s straight hair? The picture where it’s blown out… that does look like her real hair… Unless you’re talking about the picture with her braids… So what?! Micro braids and the super long twists are so cute, and popular amongst naturals!
It’s not about the way we WISH our hair grew out our head – it’s the versatility of it.
