Congressman Allen West is known for being a hardline conservative and avid Tea Partier who has said many questionable things about President Obama and his Congressional peers. But after he claimed that many of his House Democratic colleagues were Communists, the NAACP politely declined to have him speak at a fundraising event.

West, A Florida Republican, was set to give the keynote speech at a local NAACP Martin Country, Florida event, but after organizers heard his inflammatory remarks, alleging that up to 80 Democratic Congress members were “part of the Communists Party” the local chapter canceled the event and didn’t invite West to speak when it was rescheduled.

“There’s a certain statement he made about Communists,” Jerry Gore, president of the Martin County NAACP, told Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers. “That statement alone … we do not represent that type of atmosphere.”

Despite angering many of his Congressional peers, Allen said he did not regret calling them Communists at all. Instead, he doubled-down, telling reporters, “It’s very interesting that people on the left are not debating the point that I made. They just don’t like the fact that it was made.”
