I have loved Nasir Jones since I first heard his voice blaring through my headphones on the Wake Up Show. Back then I’d sit in my room and listen as emcees from across the country waxed poetic about life. After that night, I made it a point to buy Nas’ debut album (on tape!) and proceeded to listen to Illmatic for a year straight when I was in high school.

Arguably Queensbrige’s finest son and emcee, Nas has not only released amazing music since his turn on Man Source’s ‘Live At the BBQ,’ but has served as one of my biggest literary influences. Listening to Illmatic gave me the courage to write my own stories, and when I applied to graduate writing programs and the applications asked about my literary influences, despite my love of many writers, I wrote only of James Baldwin and Nas.

So you can imagine how excited I was when I learned that VH1 would finally be profiling Queen’s premier emcee on Behind the Music, a show that takes fans inside the lives of their favorite artists. On the episode, Nas will apparently talk about his childhood growing up in one of the country’s roughest housing projects, his mother’s death from cancer, and his breakup with ex-wife Kelis.

Check out a Sneak Peek of Nas’ ‘Behind the Music’ episode. Who else should be featured on the show?

I also would like to see one for India Arie. I like Nas as well, ‘Stillmatic’ is my favorite one. I used to know each song on that album by heart.
