My mother is responsible for my love of music. She loves telling stories of putting headphones on her stomach during pregnancy and how I never failed to kick and groove. As a kid we danced around the living room to all of her favorite jams. Our sessions were probably the only time I didn’t get in trouble for standing on the furniture. She introduced me to my grandmother’s intense record collection. Now, I send her a picture every time I purchase a piece of vinyl. I was the kid who played in my mom’s music collection and not her jewelry. Whenever she couldn’t find her Prince or LL Cool J tapes, she knew exactly where the were. She would show me the concert tickets stubs from her high school days, the pins she wore on her jacket, and give me old mixtapes.
Thinking about those mixtapes inspired me to work on a playlist for this weekend. The plan is to include all of our favorite songs and a few tracks that are exclusively about celebrating the blessing of having a dope mom. Here a few tracks on my list:
“A Song for Mama” by Boyz II Men
“I Made It” by Jay-Z
“Mama Knew Love” by Anthony Hamilton
“Hey Mama” by Kanye West
“I’ll Always Love My Mama” – The Intruders
