Excellent point. When I was an undergrad I once had a debate with a Middle Eastern young woman in class about who the “real” Egyptians were. She contended that some of her family members were Egyptian, and that they had been in the country for decades, so they were “real Egyptians.”

I responded by saying sure, White people are “real Americans” and have been here for hundreds of years, but that doesn’t make them the original, indigenous/native Americans.

Please watch the Real House Wives of Atlanta trip to Africa, I felt ashamed for some of them. There are many many people who think this way in the developed world and some do it as a way to subtly put down an African they feel threatened by.

This is why I, a regular male reader of this online publication, frequents this website. A large percentage of the articles are very enlightening, encouraging, and address issues that are not often cited.

Another interesting tidbit is that Ethiopia is the 3rd fastest growing economy in the world, is the birthplace of coffee, and is one of the oldest nations in the world and one of the oldest Christian nations in the world. Ethiopia is also home to some of the oldest churches on the planet that are still standing to this day. Some even believe that Noah’s Ark is sacredly protected in an ancient temple in Ethiopia.

Furthermore, Kenya has the ancient Swahili kingdom of Gedi and while many think that the pyramids are the hallmark of ancient construction, there is an ancient structure in Nigeria, the Wall of Sheba or it is sometimes referred to as Sungbo Eredo is a 100 mile long wall that required more movement of earth than the pyramids and many archeologist believe it has been around much longer. The difference is that it is not as studied as the pyramids and it is covered in thick, thick undergrowth deep in the Nigerian rainforest so its exploration has taken more time than others.

Africa has a progressive present, a bright future, and a proud but mostly still unknown past.

I have seen these types of articles one too many times. I just personally feel that I don’t typically come across people who think this way. Personally I think that because of America’s diversity, a good portion of Americans are perhaps more aware of different cultures more so than some non-Americans who are less well traveled/exposed.

It’s not just Africa. The average American is very ignorant about Europe and even North America.
