If you’re hesitant to allow someone else to give you a trim then there is always the alternative of going onto YouTube and learning how to trim your own hair After a lot of hesitancy to get my hair trimmed at the hair salon, I did so at home after some intense research and viewing of all the available videos, etc. My hair is as healthy as it usually is with a trim, whenever my hair begins to split at the ends, i take the hair shears and do what a stylist did minus the twenty-something dollars funneled into their pocket and out of my gas tank. This is not to discourage you from going to a salon to trim your hair but take into consideration that if you cannot find someone that you trust will take care of your hair there are other options than going to a salon or doing it yourself.

“DILLUSIONAL”??? WHAT? THE CORRECT WORD IS “DELUSIONAL.” How can a writer spell delusional incorrectly? My sister, you are making black people and black writers look uneducated. We need to be very careful of things like this. Correct this immediately and use spell-check before you post. A spelling error like that makes readers question the whole article.

Well… I needed my hair straightened and the guy I was seeing at the time said he knew a girl. So he took me there. She straightened and wrapped my hair.
When I took the wrap down my bangs were scorched!

I told him about it and asked him out of curiosity how he knew chick. Turns out, they were friends (of course)… WHO USED TO DATE!

I’m Ethiopian and this is a common if not required experience each time I go to a fellow Ethiopian for a “trim”. Whether the “trim” was requested in Ethiopia or in America, the stylist as you said does what they think is right for you, not what you asked for. But I usually end up happy with the new unexpected result. I think it’s good in a lot of ways because I’m very simple when it comes to my hair cut so getting a fresh perspective from a hairstylist has worked out for me. I think in going to a white stylist I end up getting charged more just for the texture of my hair let alone any additional cutting they deemed necessary. If you can’t trust the person cutting your hair, then who can you trust?!?!

I was in south Africa and I walked into the salon at my school. I was very scared but me and coloured girls seemed to have the same texture and all the hair stylists were colored so I felt safe. My first red flag should have been when they told me they provided relaxers. My hair was in its natural curly state. I said no just a blow out and trim. Once they blew it out they realized how long it was and then they got excited. When it came to the trim I started noticing a lot more of my hair was coming down than should. I asked her what she was doing and she said she was giving me layers but I wasn’t losing any length. My hair grows crazy slow. I told her no just keep it one length for the rest but the damage was done. It’s been a year and my hair on the top has yet to grow out to meet my bottom. I cut my hair 11 years ago and it’s just getting back to its original length it was when I cut it, it’s so annoying that people think because you have long hair that they can do whatever without telling you first. Oh and that spot is puffy too because the crown of my hair is more course than any other part of my head. Thank God I keep it naturally curly most of the time.

I have had a couple of hater trims. I don’t even ask for a trim anymore but she will trim the frayed ends every now and again. She won’t cut it as that’s an additional charge which I won’t pay for if I didn’t ask for it but because she can’t stand frayed ends she will only trim it.

I think black stylists are just glad to cut hair. They don’t get to cut lots of hair as frequently like white stylists do because BW want their hair to grow long and rarely chop it off. All hair stylists love to cut hair. I think that desire to snip coupled with being overexcited at having loads of hair to work with leads to too much being taken off.

It was a cold winter, my hair needed a perm. I do not know,nor care to know how to do those. This chic was recommended to me during undergrad by another chic. She had the hair game on lock, apparently. I was beyond thrilled, finally the unruliness of new growth would be tamed by a “professional”.

Great, I meet her, we instantly click, and that’s that. She starts doing my hair, we are talking about bois, and we get into a comfortable zone. She applies Dark and Lovely. we wait for it to set in. I have thick hair so she times it by the thickness-*blank stare*. Soon enough, I’m on fire, and my scalp needs Jesus and that one tear he wept in the Bible to cleanse me of the pain. My mother always told me beauty is pain, she confirms the same with not wanting to rinse of the chemical. Great! Now, I’m really on fire. She decides to rinse it out.

After all is said and done, my hair is laiddd the fug out. Slight problem, I have dead ends that need to be clipped. Alright, so what she burned my head, my hair is turrrrrnt all the way out, as in laid! Clip, clip, clip, clip she goes on and on. I stop her, in shock. My LONG hair falling all the way past the shoulders, bra clipping length, is now at, eh yeah! I called it a WRAP! I was FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMING. I saw red for a full year.
