Wait, What? NY Post Writer Says Brooklyn Nets Should Change Name to Brooklyn N—–s Because of Jay-Z
Since rising to the top of hip hop, Jay-Z–a former Brooklyn D-boy–has gone completely corporate, inking deals with Reebok, producing Broadway shows (‘Fela!’), and becoming part owner of the NBA franchise the Nets.
Over the past few years, Jigga’s been working overtime to bring to Nets to Brooklyn, a feat that is nearing completion. While the construction company puts the finishing touches on the downtown Brooklyn stadium, the team recently rolled out its new logo, a clean black-and-white design. But not everyone was pleased with the logo. While some brushed it off as a little boring and uninspiring, New York Post writer Phil Mushnick had some offensive advice for the team and its famous investor, Shawn Carter.
Mushnick wrote:
As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?
Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B—-hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!
Umm…what?
While Mushnick was waaaaay out of line and should be held accountable for his offensive comments (and by held accountable I mean fired), where were his editors who let this article by published without question?
Just like other writers who’ve said racially questionable things, I have no doubt Mushnick will feel the wrath of the ‘web, but I just wish people who actually think like this would keep it to themselves. Not everything we think or feel should sent into the ether for the world to see.
NY Post is, and has always been NYC’s trashiest paper.
They’re notorious for crossing the lines.

Yea NY Post sucks….but I can def do without the Nets in BK…have u seen that ugly monstrosity of a stadium? I can just imagine the influx of people in that area now…yikes!
Yeah I’ve seen it; bigger than I expected.
I did read about residents complaining that the sidewalks in the neighborhood would become a hazard from estimated 18,000 people that will flood to the area; also saying that it’ll be too small for residents and patrons to share. I do feel sorry for the organizers that fought for years to stop the project, but I must admit I’m still happy Brooklyn will have a team lol !
I don’t think the Post writer was out of line at all. Jay-Z has made his millions using the “N” word and calling women bit*ches. The writer was making a valid point, IMO.

I’m a former Jay-Z fan (he fell off after the Black Album and marriage, lol) so I’m familiar with his lyrics and obviously so is the writer.
So a Black man buys a Bball team and it is a hood thing. I do not like where America is going, but hate seems to rule. Is Jay Z not living the American Dream or is the American Dream only for other people?
LoWanda: I hear yeah. Jay Z is definitely living the American Dream. I am so proud of him because he is using his money responsibily. J is such a smart businessman. While I think the reporter is wrong for dissin’ him (in light of the fact that he is bringing business to Brooklyn)….what the reporter is doing is eluding to J’s past of calling women B’s and H’s. Now that JZ has a daughter perhaps that will all cease.
