First Look at The Walking Dead Fan Fave Michonne

Michonne is fierce. Fans of The Walking Dead comic book series and its TV adaptation eagerly anticipate the debut of the show’s 3rd season, and her character’s integration into the hit show (no pun intended). With production of season three under way, this latest footage may go a long way in confirming the hype.

Last week, fans got their first up close & personal look at a kitana wielding Michonne, played by Zimbabwean-American actress Danai Gurira. As a graphic novel heroine, Michonne is a indestructible zombie mutilator with a heartrending back-story. Allegedly, the AMC version of the pivotal character will be pretty similar: “The essence of the character — her personality, her motives, everything that makes Michonne Michonne — remains intact from the comics,” Robert Kirkman (the creator of the comic and executive producer of the TV adaptation) tells EW. “But like a lot of things on the show, there will be little tweaks and differences here and there. We saw that her introduction is slightly different from how it was in the comic, and her interaction with Andrea is really going to be a really cool addition to the character that I think will get television viewers up to speed, and they’ll get to know her a lot faster than comic book readers did.”

The hooded, kitana-brandishing protector made an iconic appearance during the final episode of season 2 – with two armless, jawless zombies shackled to her, no less. In-keeping with her ‘post-apocalypse’ storyline in the comic book, Michonne’s character will expand throughout season 3.

Robert Kirkman explained why the Treme actress was chosen for the dynamic role: “We looked at a lot of talented people that were really fantastic, but we were waiting for that one spark, that moment where everyone was completely in agreement and completely excited, and we felt like we had found the essence of this fictional character that just randomly appeared in another person, and that person was Danai Gurira. She kind of came in and really just blew us all away. She’s got incredible presence, and she’s got a theater background, and is very physical, and was just perfect for the role.”

With this new enigmatic addition to the cast, season 3 may be worth a view. For production teasers, check out the show’s site on AMC.com. The Walking Dead will return to the small screen in October.

  1. Can’t wait for season 3! Season 2 (parts 1 and 2) kinda dragged, with the exception of the finales of both parts which were awesome. I think Season 3 will be much more intense and action-packed.

  2. yayy i can’t wait!! the thing that bothers me though is….. (please don’t kill me) why are all the white female characters on the show attractive but the one (now two) black female characters on the show aren’t?

    • All the white women are attractive? Lori Grimes who looks like crayfish, Carol who looks like ancient of days. Andrea has a strong face and is not particularly sexy and the chick who wanted to kill herself is just another pasty looking white girl. They are not attractive but very plain. Do a google search for Danai before talking like this. Chick is bad. You seen her breasts and her body? Chile…

    • maybe it was just a bad picture?!?! idk she just kinda looks like whoopi goldberg in that photo.

      okay some people are taking things overboard. nobody said ANYTHING about light skin, mixed race, and european features. unless that’s what YOU think attractive is. hmm?? i mean a woman that loos like meagan good or gabrielle union or angela bassett or yaya decosta. none of them are light skinned.lol

      it’s just that they always seem to downplay black women’s beauty and make non black women look prettier when in the same movie/tv show. and those talking about “it’s post apocalyptic they arent in makeup blah blah” TRUE but the female characters there don’t have hair armpits, eyebrows, and legs and they have new clothes every few episodes.lol i bet if the show was about all black survivors then suddenly it’ll be accurate -_-

    • Chanela,

      I get what you are saying. She does look kind of rough in that photo. If you look up the actress playing her however she is actually quite pretty. That is a wig actually. The actress sports very short natural hair which flatters her much more than the wig. Its a really bad dread wig which doesnt do her any favours. I think she would look much better without the wig but the character in the comic has locs. So I guess they are just trying to keep it consistent.

    • What do you mean by them (the white female characters) being attractive? What do you find attractive about them, specifically? All of the characters they chose for the characters were suitable for the roles. Focus on the talent.

    • Umm I think she is beautiful. This picture really doesn’t do her justice. This photo is her as a character living in a post apocalyptic world she is not going to look glamorous. Would you have like Zoe Saldana to play the part with her more feminine (european) facial features.

    • I think that she’s pretty, and think that she does have feminine features. Have you seen her cheek bones? Perhaps they chose Danai Gurira because she resembles the character she’ll be playing. Another reason they may have chosen her: she’s a talented actress and writer.

    • In case the larger-sized font (or the article for that matter) was not read, they chose her because she was the best fit for the character. Michonne is an attractive Zimbabwean-American just as Sarah Wayne Callies is an attractive European-American. Beauty comes in all phenotypes.

  3. I’m a fan of the comics and the show, and I have been waiting for Michonne’s appearance forever. There are still some characters missing, so I wonder how she’ll transition into the script without one specific character. But I’m still patiently waiting for Season 3.

    And a few of the comments above show that people will never be satisfied with Blacks on screen (no blaming Whites here). Its either why light and no dark? Why unattractive over attractive (despite its subjectivity)? Why thick/fat over slim? Why interracial over Black love? etc; etc; etc; etc;
