Beauty is Pain: What Part of Your Routine Do You Dread Most?
There’s a reason women say it’s not easy to look this good—it’s true. As much as we love stepping out looking our absolute bests, the process to get there sometimes makes us ask over and over and over again, is it worth it? When we see how good we look, we usually answer yes, but when it comes time to doing that one aspect of our beauty routine that’s extremely painful, time consuming, or ridiculously expensive again, those doubts creep back up.
For me, that thing is eyebrow threading. The process is truly different every time because I haven’t been able to consistently go to the same person. Sometimes it feels like the woman is trying to pull out every single hair outside of my brow line individually, other times I think the artist is trying to get every hair in one pull, along with each strand I have along my hair line, my cheeks, and everywhere else which makes me think, hey I didn’t ask for all that. But no matter how it’s done, for me it hurts—terribly bad—and that’s just a fact. Threading also almost cost me a friend because when I told one of my girls threading was worth the pain, when all was said and done, let’s just say she didn’t agree with me.
For another one of my close friends, threading doesn’t bother her, but she has to take a shot or two before going in for a waxing. She likes to knock all of her hair removal out at once so by the time she gets her eyebrows, armpits, legs, and her love below taken care of, she’s nearly numb from head to toe. But since it’s a once a month thing she figures she can stomach the infrequent pain. After doing painful and non-effective electrolysis treatments more than she’d care to think about and breaking out every time she tries Nair in a pinch, waxing has been her best bet. But trust, there are days when she regrets it.
Some parts of our hair routines are a little trying too, shall we say. Most of us have experienced the dreaded scalp burn when our heads tingled with pain during a relaxer application and we were left with blisters all up under our roots. But even simple things like braiding can be torture for the tender headed. Sometimes you’re just doing it for a braid out, other times, it’s the first step for a sew-in, but no matter the sty;e, depending on how determined the braider is to get every single piece of hair in that braid, you might find yourself asking, why did I sign up for this? I know I’m not the only one who goes through some uncomfortable processes in the name of beauty so tell us your experiences.
What beauty regimen do you hate the most?

Bikini waxing. Just can’t seem to get used to it, but the results are good.
Waxing is a necessary evil! It’s not my favorite thing to do, but I religiously go every 6 weeks.
My hair . I dread combing it or paying ridiculous money on it. I wish I was born with straight hair/curly hair like everyone else so I can just wake up,brush it a couple times and look good. Or not have to pay lots of money to make it look presentable. Sick of my hair ruining my outfits , bank account, choices and sleep pattern . Everything else beauty related is easy and I enjoy doing .
I so feel you on the hair thing! I hate fooling with my hair so much, I have been wearing braids for months! Before the braids, I had a cute short cut..BUT…I had to use 3 different hot curlers EACH morning to get the desired look and I had to stay at a barber shop to keep the back lined up and cut low. Then I wore my hair medium length in a bob …that was nice until I went to a Dominican salon and they used so much heat on my hair, it looked thinner! I want to go natural, but I don’t know how I will look and I wish I could just cut it all off, but my head is not the right size/shape for that! I love my hair and thank God for it, but sometimes, it is a headache!
Idk how many times I’ve walked past a barber shop to just cut all my hair off. I think after I lose 20 pounds, Ill try the Halle Berry with a texturizer bc my bank account has taken a toll as well…along with my patience.
well forcing your hair to do what it can’t and won’t do will be a pain in the arse. Wishing for hair that isn’t yours will make it a pain too. Real talk.
I hear you, lady. I wish I had the hair texture/length of hair that allows for easy styling.
Listening to so many of you complain about the daily difficulties of styling your hair has been really eye opening for me. It’s not something that I ever think about. I just wake up, comb it and it’s good to go for the day. I do hit the salon once a week for maintenance, but that’s about it. I guess I’ve taken that ease for granted. Thanks for the insight.
Snatch waxing….so painful!
i dread all waxing!!
I agree, waxing. Ish hurts!!!
Hair braiding is my thing. I used to braid my hair tight and catching every single strand to the point of needing ibuprofen to think. I’ve learned to loosen up and the braids still turn out FAB!
I’m a wimp! pretty just isn’t worth pain in my opinion.
