Essentially, butt whippings don’t work in the way that you all think. They temporarily stop the behavior because really, who likes to be smacked around?

Sure do all this 1st and if that don’t work…butt whipping always does….And I thought he said he didn’t choke her but she did come at him and he did restrain her…..hm…..Now if you are a teen and above in my house coming at me like I’m somebody on the street then don’t be mad if I come at you like I don’t know you…..

I used to be a firm believer in corporal punishment but then I realized that i did too much of the spanking in anger and to be honest, the children didn’t learn any lessons other than “don’t piss dad off.”

I do like the writer does, take away privileges, negotiate, ground, and discuss. It is much more effective and they actually learn.

^This sentence right here is why I’m trying to find ways to convey people I don’t like them by not smacking them. Apparently, that’s frowned upon.

James Hill is absolutely correct in his assessment. I heard about the Creflo Dollar incident via social media and urban websites and was too shocked and disgusted at the stance that so many people took- that she must have done something to provoke him and therefore warrant his attack on her. There is nothing a daughter or son can do that would ever drive their parent, especially their father who is likely much physically stronger than their child, to punch and choke them to the point of leaving scars or calling the police. I gaurantee this wasn’t the first time he hit her but hopefully this would be the last. What I also found surprising was his wife’s response, or lack thereof, to the whole incident. How often do we hear about children being abused/ killed by their fathers or mother’s boyfriends while the mother stands idly by doing nothing and is aware of the abuse. Beating, hitting, spanking, whatever you want to call it, a child is NOT a good parenting technique.

This is the way my parents raised me. My mother took a parenting class just out of curiosity and she said it was one of the best things she ever did. up that point she would just scream and hit me all day under that same bible verse of sparing and spoiling. pinching, yelling at me, etc. and she said she didn’t know any better. i was about 2ish when she took the class and she realized she didn’t have to hit me to get the point across. as we got older she made us understand one time that our parents were to be respected, if we listened everything was cool. we had clear rules, they took things away if we disobeyed, we talked out situations, we thought up our own punishments, and the only time we got spankings/beating was if we did something extremely bad. but now, especially in black communities, this style of parenting is too ‘radical’. you don’t beat your child so they will turn out to be a demon right? not if you start from a young age and even if you don’t, be consistent. sometimes they need that spanking but 95% of the time there are other ways to deal with your child.
