I think this Lena Horne quote pretty much sums up my thoughts on this.

“Don’t be afraid to feel as angry or as loving as you can..because when you feel nothing, its just death”

We’re so often taught that too much of certain emotions are a bad thing, but then people try to stifle them…. until said emotions become too much to “handle”… insert depression, drugs, alcohol, and suicide here. Support systems and faith are important, but really being able to express your anger, fear, love, or grief to the fullest is healthy. My mother cried hard, she laughed hard, but most importantly she loved hard…. never really had time to sit around and feel sorry for herself. I definitely think I picked that up from her. Black women for whatever reason tend to have that down for the most part.

I think it has less to do with the community and more to do with the idea that life isn’t fair and it isn’t going to be so just get on with it.

When I first heard about the study I was pleased because it was a welcome change from the media’s steady stream of negative depictions of black women.

With that said, America still has a long way to go when it comes to racism. We live in a culture that wants to demonize and benefit from black women at the same time.

I think black women should be cautious about allowing themselves to be guinea pigs in this “study”, which is not so much about helping the military’s trailer and ghetto trash as it about finding reasons to withdraw what liitle support is given to them when they’re dischared from the military.

Kinda like – ‘help yaselves losers, if black women can get by on nothing. so can you”.

Easy to see how the rich and powerful stay rich and powerful when people can be so easily manipulated to act against their own interests. Nobody’s being helped on this, it’s just another pretend study to make it look like aomebody gives a damn.

Studies are cheap, cheaper than spending money giving people practical support. All ya need is is a psychology grad with a clipboard and a bunch of questionaires to handout.

If they really want to help people – stop making war and use the war money to provide the services people need.
