Do Black Brits Care About the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee?
For the past few days, our cousins across the Pond have been celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th year on the throne. From concerts and public festivals, to a grand parade of over 1,000 boats on the River Thames, the world has been watching as Brits have celebrated in the streets amid a bevy of pomp and circumstance.
But what about Black Britons? Are they just as excited about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee?
I conducted a very unscientific survey and reached out to my black British friends to ask if they were wrapping themselves in the Union Jack and taking to the streets to celebrate with her Majesty. As I suspected, the collective feeling amongst my friends was a resounding, “meh.” While they were happy for the days off from work, many didn’t care at all about the Queen and her 60th year on the throne.
But how about you, UK Clutchettes? Are you excited about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or are you just not feeling it?
I got the opposite reaction. I wouldn’t say giddy but I would say interested from a historical perspective. I find the same reaction here in the US to our memorial events.
I love history so for me it’s very interesting for that reason alone. And I’m well aware of the colonial sins of the British as well.
We all like extra days off!!! I have learnt little things about the history and tradition of Britain but have not gone all the way with Union Jacks etc. I do commend the inclusion of the Commonwealth in the celebrations- but I think for some Black Brits the Queen and her era symbolises colonialism at it’s peak, so I guess it is bitter sweet
To be honest im not really bothered about it. I like the Queen but I don’t have any emotional connection to her. Im way more excited for the presidential elections in november! Im no american but I do love Obama. God save Obama! Haha
60 years? No way I could be the Prince, good ole mummy would have met a very timely demise……..
As a black brit living in the US, I watched some of the celebrations on BBC America; it was interesting. I don’t miss that weather at all lol
