Blackberry Babes is a comedy/parody. Thinking that Blackberry Babes is a reflection of Nigerian culture is like watching Soul Plane and thinking such shenanigans is part and parcel of everyday African American life.

Cities in South Africa (and other countries on the continent) (and every other continent) are just like the cities in the United States: you have your “haves” and “have nots.”

Not everyone is poor and starving and not everyone is wealthy and eating out in expensive restaurants and popping champagne every night for dinner. We’ve got kids starving in the States, but there are still bakeries here who throw edible baked goods into the trash every night so that they can always sell “freshly baked today!” and don’t get me on the welfare mom’s who have no job, can barely take care of their kids, but have a regular hair and nail salon appointment every other week.

Okay i guess the thing we are all missing is they are getting this attitude and behavior from the US. We are the ones who set the trends and everyone rolls with it. They see African Americans with the cars, money clothes and hoes, and think this is the life. These young kids in the US with their tight pants and mom and dad’s money are not one bit interested in working and becoming responsible and guess what the world is watching and they are saying hey that’s the way we are supposed to act too. I live outside of the US now and I tell you one thing to remember, Black Americans are hated in America (to a certain extent) but when we leave and go elsewhere they are falling all over us. We are the beautiful, smart, and stylish ones, we are to be copied. THey copy our clothes, hair, dancing, singing, etc. These kids are lost and their families are stupid because they aren’t teaching them to be adults and be responsible; now don’t that sound like the family of your favorite RAPPERS????

This is nothing new, we been flossing in America for years. We see it here in our communities. The problem arise when it’s the drug dealers doing the most flashing. Young people see drug dealing, etc. as a way to get fast cash to by those Jordans. Black folks around the world like to flash and look good, i raise my hand cause i’m guilty. We don’t have to wear our wealth or so called wealth from head to toe. I would rather park a little car in my garage at my house than park a Benz in my parking spot at the apartments.

I am sorry this is very stupid. I can’t watch the video, but these teenagers are idiots. Black South Africans, on average, have the lowest savings rate in the country, while white South Africans own 85% of the assets. So the money they are spending are flowing mostly into white South African hands and not into their savings account.

It’s disturbing to me that, even though this is a trend among youth and teens, that the person profiled in this as ‘the leader of the born-agains’ is unemployed yet he’s apparently able to find a way to spend thousands to participate in this culture. These kids leverage their parents and families wealth to participate in this culture/lifestyle yet the report says they look down on people who work. Where do they think money comes from?! It’s not surprising that the families want to also ‘show their wealth’ and how far they’ve come since apartheid, etc. by spending lavishly on their children – but it’s a poor indicator of what was learned by those hard times, i.e. the value of money and the hard work put into earning it, etc. – for these families to support a lifestyle for their children that involves burning money, being unemployed, destroying clothes, etc. You should not be able to be materialistic if you are not able to afford material things – which none of these kids could do on their own. It’s a shame the adults giving them the money for this (which doesn’t include the kids who the socialite in the report said steal the clothes, etc.) are supporting this kind of lifestyle.
