The reason why we are not banning relaxers for those under 18, those who wear natural hair styles are still being rejected for jobs - viewed as unprofessional. And, there are still many, many men who will reject a woman outright for not having long permed hair. Yes...I know there are some sisters who are not affected...but, there are still many who are. Just pay attention to who the ball players, entertainers, and other public figures got hanging off their arms...and you will see why black women (and/or girls) do what they do...

BTW: I'm natural by force...hair can't take perms for very long...just being honest...

Agreed..I can't say Ive run into "zealots" but I have run into a lot of "know it alls" and they have been "natural" for no time. Like a fad, this new wave of naturalistas has renewed itself, reasons different from the past of course, but now its intensified 10 fold with the urban blogging, and now medias inflated attention of natural celebrities. Now all the sudden everyones an expert. I don't know how often I am quoted something from some blog about someones natural journey...YAWN...I didn't hear ANY of this when I cut all of my hair off almost 10 years ago. Its not until the past 3/4 years or so that I would have people approach me asking if I got this from this persons blog, do what this person does on that blog, copied what this celebrity did to their hair on this webpage, and some even had the gaul to SUGGEST I go to this/that persons blog to LEARN how to shampoo my locs?? LEARN? Are you serious? Woman are enthusiastic about their hair, which is awesome, but that enthusiasm somehow gets to some women's egos, and enthusiasm can quickly turn into chauvinism. I enjoyed this article. As a woman whose hair has been natural for almost 10 years, I can understand this writers frustration on several levels. I have sistas who have perms, wear weaves and wigs, and tell me about their schooling on "natural hair" from their co-workers and associates with natural hair....Its got to be frustrating. But then I, who have been natural for so long, have been questioned and judged, but always, and not shockingly, by someone else's "natural" standard of beauty. Its the same deal with the women who still look at me funny, and shake their head, just BECAUSE I have locs. (Like the older black woman who told me my hair looks like a head full of snakes..yikes!) Frankly, it doesn't bother me anymore. Ive experienced this on both sides enough over the years, that now I just politely listen, and move on with my day. I still love talking about HAIR with anyone who approaches me about my hair. Its always humbling because I love my hair and Black hair, and thats what that counts :)

Just as there are some militant, judgmental perm/weave wearing sisters. LOTS. I've had my head shaved for over ten years and I can't tell you the number of times I've been called bald-headed by some chick wearing 24" yaki or whatever! Why is it ok to shame natural women for being who we are, but when a natural questions perm/weave women about how you feel about YOUR hair its a problem?

Thank you for this article! Even though it seems a lot of people disagree, I do agree that some natural hair advocates are a little EXTRA. I don't judge you for your 'fro so don't judge me for my weave. Live and let weave :)

Thank you, I admire all hair that is well kept. I respect those on their natural journey. And i respect the sisters with 22 inches of that premium virgin indian/brazilian/mongolian/cambodian what ever. But i have seen instances where the folks, my own folks equate perms and weaves with self hatred. Just because you have a fro, it doesn't mean you love yourself, sorry!

As I stated on the other article about natural hair not everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to chop off their hair and go natural. I believe especially in some of my peers that taking care of their hair is the problem. I love my relaxed hair and lately on tv, the internet, and other forms of black media it is beginning to become a fad that other black women are trying to push on women with relaxed hair. Don't judge me or any other woman because they like having their hair relaxed is basically what this article stands for!

my two cents.... so i don't know if anyone else will admit it, but I'm guilty. I'm guilty of judging a person's hair health... not their blackness. Let me explain... There is nothing worse to me than a bad head of hair. I'd rather a person be bald than not take care of their tresses. That being said, if you have non chemically and or heat treated hair, you can also have non chemically and or heat treated unhealthy hair if regimen practices aren't in place. Its even more obvious when a person has chemically and or heat treated hair. I would never assume that someone wants my help and if they do ask I won't go all "free yourself from these chains" speechy. And that is what i think most non-naturals... ( I can't stand the term natural by the way ) ... have issue with.
Their is always some natural out their with her hemp soap and vegan this or that, trying to get people to come out of the dark and embrace their blackness.
For the last time.. having chemically and or heat treated hair does not make you less black.. Thus having natural hair isn't the key to black enlightenment. Its a choice.
Non black women have been dying, blowdrying, perming and altering their hair since the beginning of time and no one questions their white-ness or asian-ness etc... lets move on people... I hate to take it there... but its all about money... on both sides of the spectrum naturals and non-naturals are being taken to the bank with all of these products... We need to tell each other that we look good regardless of what we decided to do with our hair and keep some of this money in our pockets ...Miss Jessie's, B1 yaki and creamy crack unite!!! ...or at least smile at one another when you walk down the street... geesh :p

Their is always some natural out their with her hemp soap and vegan this or that, trying to get people to come out of the dark and embrace their blackness.
For the last time.. having chemically and or heat treated hair does not make you less black.. Thus having natural hair isn’t the key to black enlightenment. Its a choice.
Non black women have been dying, blowdrying, perming and altering their hair since the beginning of time and no one questions their white-ness or asian-ness etc… lets move on people… I hate to take it there… but its all about money… on both sides of the spectrum naturals and non-naturals are being taken to the bank with all of these products… We need to tell each other that we look good regardless of what we decided to do with our hair and keep some of this money in our pockets …Miss Jessie’s, B1 yaki and creamy crack unite!!! …or at least smile at one another when you walk down the street… geesh :p
