A not-so-funny thing happened at last night’s BET Awards. During the lead-up to the Best Female R&B Artist award, one of the member’s of the boy band Mindless Behavior made it a point to take a jab at Lauryn Hill’s tax problems.
During the pre-award banter with Mike Epps, one of the teens told the comedian, “You sing BAD … like Lauryn Hill’s tax accountant bad.”
When I heard the joke, my first reaction was shock. Did this little boy just diss Ms. Hill? Did this child, who will only get to hold a Grammy if he goes to the museum and poses with one, dare take shots at L-Boogie, the woman who has five golden statues at home? Is this real life?
Apparently, I wasn’t the only one upset at the mindless joke from the Mindless Behavior youth. King Bey wasn’t feeling it either.
After she won the award, the singer proceeded to change up her acceptance speech to send a special shout out to Lauryn Hill and Mary J. Blige for paving the way for her. And according to TMZ, Beyonce was still perturbed when she left the stage, calling the joke very “disrespectful” and “not cool.”
