Sherman Hemsley, who was most famous for his role as George Jefferson on the memorable ’70s sitcom “The Jeffersons,” has died at 74 years old.

According to TMZ:

Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas. Hemsley became famous during his appearances on “All in the Family.” The spin-off, “The Jeffersons,” was a monster hit. He also starred in the TV show “Amen” and was a professional singer who even released a single in 1989, “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head.”

No details have been released on the cause of death, though it’s believed he died of natural causes. Hemsley had no wife or children.

We extend our condolences to his family, friends, and host of adoring fans.

Awww, so sad to hear, he was on a reality show and seemed like such a nice nice man. I’ll forever love his work on The Jeffersons he was a magnificent actor!

  • Laugh

Oh, and let’s not forget his incredible work on Amen also! All I can hear right now is THELMA & WEEZAY.

  • edub

What a great talent he was! He will be sorely missed. @Laugh–that was The Surreal Life. I agree with you. He seemed so nice and humble.

  • But Girl…

does it not say Amen up there? yall slay me commenting and not reading

  • Laugh

@ but girl, I was actually correcting myself for not mentioning Amen in my post.

  • Laugh

Thanks edub, that’s precisely what made me realize how great an actor he was because he is nothing like George or Deacon Frye! He was born & raised in Philly I always remember hearing how he was a mailman before he became an actor.

*Throw punch bowl DAMN DAMN DAMN* RIP Sherman a real true television pioneer loved George Jefferson because he just didnt care and said whatever and also Deacon Ernest J.Frye who as a lawyer made you sometimes wonder how he kept his law license lol. In this day of reality show trash we had some great tv back not to long ago and real talents, wish we could go back to that. By the way next time I hit the club I’m doing the George Jefferson and I dont wanna hear no static about it lol

  • Candi83

He was on the Surreal Life and I thought the same thing too. He seemed so nice, introspective and funny. I’m sad too see him go.
