Last night, Oprah sat down with reining pop diva Rihanna for one of the most-talked about interviews of the year. During their chat, Oprah’s superior interviewing skills were on full display as she easily coaxed RiRi into opening up and being amazingly vulnerable on camera.
Ms. O and Rihanna chatted about her early years in Barbados, her relationship with her father, and exactly how she feels about Chris Brown.
Twitter erupted with commentary about their interview, most of which praised the singer for her openness and willingness to share.
Like most people who tuned in, I walked away with a new appreciation for Rihanna who—for the first time in a while—let the world see more than just her IDGAF attitude. She was open, funny, generous, and seemed extremely self-possessed. Throughout their chat it was clear that RiRi isn’t a mindless pop star only able to regurgitate what her handlers tell her. She is a young woman struggling to figure out her place in the world and is more than capable of speaking for herself.
Throughout their chat, a few things stood out to me. So here are 3 things we learned from Oprah and Rihanna’s conversation.
She Still Loves Breezy
Although many have wondered if Rihanna was still in love with Chris Brown, the Bajan beauty let it be known that she still loves him. Although they aren’t getting back together anytime soon, RiRi told Oprah the pair are working on their friendship and that she wants him to be happy.
“I think he was the love of my life. He was my first love and I see that he loved me the same way,” she admitted to Oprah. “I truly love him—the main thing for me is he’s at peace. I’m not at peace if he’s not happy or he’s still lonely. I care. It actually matters that he finds that peace.”
While some people scoffed at the revalation that Rihanna still loves Chris Brown despite “the incident,” I found it understandable. And as I mentioned on Twitter, it’s one thing to still love someone, but quite another to be in a relationship with them. I think Rihanna knows the difference as well.
