The media frenzy around Gabby Douglas has occupied both sides of the ethical spectrum. In some instances, it’s been uplifting and inspirational, like her profile in People Magazine. Other reports have veered on the repugnant and salacious side.
After learning about the more negative reports, the 16 year-old could have eschewed media coverage altogether. Instead, she seems empowered to tell her story her way, starting with an appearance on “Oprah’s Next Chapter.”
Oprah has been vocal about her support for the 16 year-old gymnast, who made history when she won gold medals in both the All-Around and Team competitions, tweeting:
Go gabby go!
OMG have y’all seen @gabrielledoug on the cover of TIME – She’s a Gazelle!
OMG I’m so THRILLED for Gabby. Flowing happy tears!! #TeamUSA
Oprah Winfrey is probably one of the best media figures to conduct this interview as she will lovingly discuss Gabby’s ascent to Olympic gold and also, carefully address the media attention she endured gracefully. It’s reported that Oprah will interview Gabby’s mother and host family as well.
The interview will take place at Gabby’s training ground in West Des Moines, Iowa and will air on Sunday, August 26 at 8:30PM EST on OWN.
