I am so beyond grateful to read this-not because I enjoy watching you suffer. lol But it’s because I grew up having the SAME exact problem you have. The ONLY person that I can remember who seemed to be positive about my hair and never once complained about my hair is my mother. She would always say she wished she had my hair. My friends, stylists, etc. would always BEG to give me a perm and they would say things like “you have too much hair” or “your hair is too thick and long”, etc. and it would make me feel so guilty, ugly, and I even started to hate my hair. I hated it so much that as soon as I went to college, I got my first perm (without my mother’s consent, she raised me with natural hair). And so when my mom came to visit me for a weekend and saw my hair… #yikes101 lol I thought she was going to kill me. lol But I was 18 and so technically I was an adult-so…lol haha But I tell you, I regret getting a perm. It changed my hair, and now I’m starting over. I’m almost 3 years natural again and I still have a lot of hair but there is still slow growth compared to when I was growing up-BUT it’s still thick as all get out and NOW I love it.
However, it does take FOREVER to find someone who can do it because everyone finds it to be too taxing….so I’m glad that I am not the only one! I hope one day to get my hair as long and beautiful as yours! :)
I loved this article. I have a whole lot of a hair, it’s thick, it’s big and I hate to do it. I will admit that I have less than you though. But I feel your pain, like “how dare our own salons refuse to do our hair!?” Am I not paying you? Crazy. Haven’t had a relaxer in 6 years and I can do it myself in two hours and I don’t have to give up an entire Saturday. So for now that’s it. Thanks for sharing!

I have very similar hair… I have, well had two stylists, but one refuses to do my hair until I allow her to give me a perm and I refuse to do that… While the other complains every time I come to get it done and begs me to get a perm and again I refuse… really I can do my own hair better then anyone else though… My problem is when I need a trim… I can’t cut my own hair… End up with one side longer then the other…. Nu uh! Not happening! So, I wish I could try doing yours… :)
