Did You Pay Attention to Fashion Week This Season?

New York Fashion Week seems to have ended just as quickly as it started without a lot of press or attention given to the seven-day run of fashion shows. There weren’t a lot of collections that stood out, even from some of the top designers like Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta.
And the celebrity quotient, which usually amplifies the glamour of it all, was glaringly low. Black A-list celebrities who usually line the front rows (think Beyonce, Kerry Washington) were largely absent with celebrity stylists like June Ambrose and Ty Hunter, and Olympians like Ryan Lochte and Sanya Richards Ross, taking their places. Solange Knowles and Kanye West plus muse only made an appearance at the end of the week.
Even the train wrecks which the media loves to exploit like the Jackie Christie show, this year’s version of the She by Sheree presentation, didn’t get as much attention as usual.
The lackluster attitude spilled over into the modeling realm. While people were happy to see Joan Smalls, Sessilee Lopez or Jourdan Dunn descend on the catwalk, no one seemed surprised or overwhelmingly bothered by the lack of diversity. Maybe everyone’s become complacent about it. Or we could simply be uninterested.
Two events that did create some interest were the Zac Posen Spring 2013 show where Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek hit the catwalk and Tracy Reese’s presentation of effortless separates which epitomized downtown cool and marked a departure from her usual feminine dresses.
But beyond the melee in which a publicist was slapped and the revelation that bloggers are now paid for street style photos, there was nothing especially groundbreaking or even newsworthy about the week.

i watch the shows that are posted on youtube.
i liked proenza schouler the most.
being that i’m a jcrew ‘ho, i liked their presentation and helmut lang. and honor was beautiful. i tend not to be a tracy reese fan b/c i’m generally not a fan of overly girlie looks but i liked the sharp jackets she presented.
mostly, nyfw is not all that interesting…looking forward to watching london and paris and milan shows.
as far as diversity goes, i don’t expect half of the models to be black at a show.
even asians designers like alexander wang, jason wu, vivienne tam and prabal gurung only use a handful of asian models. evidently, pressure comes from some source to put mostly white models on the runway, not necessarily the designers. i’ve never heard where this pressure comes from.
the only reason there are asians models now is because of the ascendance of asia/china. obviously, their aesthetic wasn’t sought out to the degree it has been today. but, when houses like chanel put on shows in asia, almost all of the models are asian.
a black designer doesn’t necessarily mean tons of black models will be used, esp. nowadays. using white models seems to be a business decision rather than an aesthetic/art one.
idk. sometimes i’m happy if i see 2-3 black models in a show.
No,I can careless about some fashion week. Make sure you people go out and vote, talking about some fashion week. Nobody really cares about fashion week, who cares!!!!!
you mean just because i watch fashion videos that means i don’t vote? lol. r u kidding me? i’m not (mostly) shallow.
the election day is nov. 6. i think i can watch some fashion stuff and vote at the same time, thank you very much.
For someone that is following New York fashion week and has been working covering shows for the past three seasons, let me start by saying that New York fashion week is turning into a big joke.
By that I mean, who invites some of the people that I feel have no business being there? How do these freaks get in? Big celebrities know that Paris and Milan are the real deal and that is where many of them will be heading soon. It is sad to say that as much as I love my New York designers, fashion week is loosing his old charm on me and that even some of the biggest luxury fashion houses don’t even bother to show there choosing instead to show in Europe.
The highlight was
a) The Tracey Reese show due to Michelle Obama wearing one of her dresses and because many young Hollywood starlets attended the show. I did not really see that at the other shows that I attended.
b)The Zac Posen show due to the drama that went there before even the show started. Other than that,it was boring.
It sadens me to say that June Ambrose is not considered a celebrity. I was talking to a TV personality well-known in her field and after mentioning June as a celebrity, she looked at me funny.
Ummm…You obviously didn’t pay attention to the shows. Clutch didn’t bother covering New York Fashion Week so how would you know what stood out? There were plenty of standouts. I personally attended some of the shows including the Arise Magazine: African Icons Presentation which was awesome! Just because you refused to cover the action doesn’t mean NYFW underwhelmed.
I agree. I’m very disappointed that Clutch didn’t cover fashion week especially since it merged with Coco and Creme.
No. No. I just don’t care for fashion.
