Post Racial America: Class Reunion Letter Specifies “White Graduates Only”

The graduates of St. Martinville, La., Senior High School Class of 1973 has shown everyone just how far we’ve come in this supposedly “post-racial” America. For the past 40 years, the school has held segregated reunions, but decided to have a single reunion event for everyone. Unfortunately, someone thought it would be a good idea to include a “White Graduates Only” party on the event invitation.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The After Game Get Together, specifically notes that it’s for white graduates only, and also requests individuals to bring their own refreshments and food to share. Apparently, they’re not only racists, but horrible party throwers. But according to Liza Chance, one of the organizers of the event, after they decided to have single reunion, the old invites “accidentally” were sent out. Even if they were accidentally sent out, why did it take 40 years for them to realize that maybe segregated events were just a tad bit racist?

As much as I’m a proponent of a utopian post-racial society, but I also know it’s still somewhat of a pipe dream, just as long as people with ideologies like those of the students of St. Martinville, La.’s Senior High School Class of 1973. Imagine what these people have taught their children. Imagine what their children have taught the grand-children. After 40 years of being excluded from an event, the black students should probably consider themselves lucky. Personally, I’d never want to be somewhere I wasn’t welcomed.

  1. Clutch, I have no clue where else to post this, but is there something you can do about this pop-up Republican campaign ad that starts playing loudly in the bottom left hand corner of the page every time I click on an article?

At first I was able to hit refresh and it wouldn’t pop up again, but now it’s becoming incessant. I couldn’t even figure out where it was coming from until I scrolled all the way to the bottom of the page. I know the opinion articles can be as opinionated as the author wants, but I’d rather not be forced to listen to a GOP commercial (or any election campaign for that matter) while I read. Please & Thank You.

  2. Just because this country is ‘post-slavery’ by all means does not mean we are ‘post racial’! I wish folks would stop saying and thinking that we are. This country remains consciously & unconsciously racist. Yes we have progressed….We may no longer see the strange fruit hanging from trees (although I’m sure in some remote, unknown towns communities are still enduring this) or ‘for colored only’ signs but there are of course other forms of racism that aren’t so outwardly evident.
