The Denial of Racism: Remembering the Woman Who Set Herself Alight

  1. Man, I feel this woman. Not the immolation. but the utter frustration. Just to put it in perspective this was an black woman who couldn’t make a decent living that would provide for her children. I’m sure her nation has legions of poor blacks and homeless blacks living in misery, while the white colonizers and oppressors in Belgium are sipping champagne and rocking blood diamonds. Belgium decimated the Congo, this woman’s country of origin, with a genocide of 10 MILLION in the 20th century (that was 50% percent of the Congo’s pop. You never hear about that one though.) In fact., she probably only came to be in Belgium, though that country’s colonist connection to the Congo. And after raping her foremothers and forefathers for generations, now it left her unable to provide for her own children. I’m sure due to institutionalized racism she couldn’t have gotten any decent state assistance. So she was going to be left homeless depending on the mercies of white to provide food. Further, homeless women are super vulnerable to sexual attacks and I’m sure if she had a daughter she feared she might be forced into prostitution or abused.

The only way we can collectively avoid suicidal or homicidal thoughts are to keep brushing of the racism we get thrown daily. The problem is it doesn’t go anywhere. It just keeps piling up. I agree with Yb though. The further away from white people you stay, the better you feel.

  2. I’ve never heard of that story but I’ve only been living in Luxembourg for 3 years now. I read her story. Friends told me about the discrimination some kids face in school. If they don’t speak German, then they’re placed in inferior classes. But she should have thought about her kids. What they certainly needed most was her love.
