Who Would You Cast To Play Aretha Franklin In Her Biopic?

Queen of Soul

  1. I think Terri Vaughn looks a lot like Ms. Franklin. I don’t know if her acting skills are that great to pull it off though. I don’t know much about her work other than the role of Lavita Alize Jenkins and a few small roles.

  2. I wonder if Jazmine Sullivan can act… Cause she could certainly have the soul down! But it definitely needs to be a strong actress. A skilled actress doesn’t have to look just like a person to give a great portrayal. Mannerisms are everything. Think about Angela as Tina and I swear Jaime looked just like Ray Charles to me, because he had his EVERY nuance down!

  3. My first thought was Jill Scott because she can sing and act and does both well without having to do the other. She did a mini series on HBO which she starred and held her own in. I think Kerry Washington will be a likely pick depending on whose producing since since she has name recognition. This issue is can she sing. In some instances it doesn’t matter such as in What’s Love Got To Do With It. Angela Bassett didn’t sing and it didn’t take away from her performance.

I do like the idea of going with an unknown (which doesn’t really address the author’s question), but the excitement of finds an untouched talent is exciting.

Otherwise I’d be looking at Regina King, Sophie Okonedo, Thandie Newton and Paula Patton and I never thought of Keke Palmer, but her voice is fantastic. She might be too young.

  4. Fantasia, Fantasia, Fantasia. She has been through some of the same situations as Ms. Franklin, she has a heart of gold, she demands her audience attention like Ms. Franklin and she definantly has the CHOPS! She can be trained for the acting but the depth will come naturally because Fantasia is ”Real”! Fantasia deserves this role and I can guarantee she will not let Ms. Franklin down. Go Fantasia, Go!
