Earlier this week I wrote about Kendrick Lamar’s new album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, and it’s been in constant rotation in my car this week. Right now my favorite track is Sherane a.k.a. Master Splinter’s Daughter. The song tells the story of woman named Sherane. Kendrick met her at a party and realized from the jump, they had a lot in common, from gang affiliation to having family members involved heavily in drugs. At this point in his life, he was trying to get his shit together, but people warned him about her. Of course he didn’t listen. Whether it’s love or lust, it doesn’t matter at this point, because he’s was on his way to her house, and only had sex on his mind. He finally reaches Sherane’s house and parks. As he’s walking towards it, he sees her standing there with two guys in hoodies. His phone rings, it goes to voicemail,  it’s his mother calling him asking for her van, and telling him to stay away from the hoodrats, especially Sherane. It’s a little too late, she set him up to get jump. Eventually retaliation ensues, and his friend is shot. All because of Sherane.

Kendrick’s story about Sherane, isn’t one that I can relate to in regards to the  violence involved, but in regards to meeting that one person, people warned you about, who sends your life in a total direction than you had planned. There are plenty Master Splinter’s sons and daughters running around. Both men and women have come across that person that wasn’t good for them, ignored the warnings, but paid the cost in the end.

Master Splinter’s Son, came in the form of my ex-fiance. I wasn’t even looking for a relationship at the time, but he kind of fell into my lap. One of my closest friends warned me. She just didn’t have a good feeling about him. She always referred to his eyes as “wicked eyes”. I had no idea what she meant by that at the time. Wooing was his speciality, and I was definitely wooed. Our romance was fast, and overwhelming. I felt like Erykah Badu when she said, “I was not looking for no love affair”, but I managed to let my guard down. When I did, he showed his Master Splinter traits. My life’s course changed at the drop of a dime. All of the plans I made were catapulted into outer space.  The wicked my friend saw in his eyes, became my reality. After that relationship, there were changes I made, some were for the best and for my own sense of security. It’samazing how one person can throw you off your life path, but it happens.

Have you ever met someone that threw you off the path you were taking? Or have you unintentionally or intentionally thrown someone off?

Whoa whoa, don’t leave out Wale (well, pre MMG wale. but he still echoes that on some songs.) Stalley, Joey Bada$$(90s NYC reincarnated) and other rappers are still out there releasing quality music as well.

You also have Childish Gambino who raps for a whole different audience of black youth. And a very good up and coming rapper out of Chicago named Chance the Rapper.

There’s a lot of talent coming up right now, the problem is that it’s so easy to become a rapper that you have to sift through all the bullcrap lil mouse, chief keef, and other trash out there.
