I’m going to keep my sarcasm to myself on this one, but as R. Kelly prepares for the debut of his R&B theatrical opera on IFC this weekend, word on the street is he may be adapting it for the stage.
During a press preview for the IFC premiere, which hits TVs on November 23, Kells told the audience he is in talks to adapt ‘Trapped in the Closet’ for the stage.
Kelly is “working on a stage adaptation of the series, thanks to interest from Broadway producers, although he apparently didn’t say who exactly.
“When nudged for additional info, like if he’d star in it as well, Kelly replied details/deals are being negotiated at the moment, so nothing’s finalized yet. He added that putting together each chapter in the series is an involved process, and he’s an army of just one; so I guess the message there was, it’ll take some time to put an entire stage show based on series together.”
‘Trapped in the Closet,’ which originally debuted in 2005, is a song/opera containing 23 chapters that tell the story of a one-night stand gone terribly wrong. Each chapter consists of different music (and videos), lyrics, and moments that allow the drama to unfold.
While it’s unclear if ‘Trapped in the Closet’ will make it to the Great White Way, you have to give R. Kelly props for attempting something never done in R&B before. But he’s only getting started.
Kelly told reporters: “I want everybody to know I’ve got 85 chapters of ‘Trapped in the Closet’ waiting in the studio for y’all. The chapters that are coming — the show, we call it — is going to exceed every chapter that you have ever seen.”

‘Trapped in the Closet’ will debut on the Independent Film Channel (IFC) on November 23.
