The holidays present the perfect time to experiment with fancy hairstyles. Many naturals straighten their hair for fancy events but there are several textured ‘dos you can try that create a regal and dressy look for the holidays. Added bonus? They’re surprisingly easy and functional.

Here are five of our favorites:

1. The pinned-back and bumped up ‘do.

This works well with hair that is loose or in two-strand twists. You divide your hair into two sections, top front and back bottom. For the back, you can either do a bun or a French roll. Now for the front, do you want the Janelle Monae-inspired front bump or pinned to the side? It all depends on how you’re feeling that day.

2. Curlformers

Curlformers (available here) are a great way to create springy spiral curls without using heat. After co-washing your hair and applying your favorite leave-in conditioner, wrap your hair around curlformers and let it dry. (If you don’t mind heat, you can also sit under the dryer for approximately an hour). You will have a head full of curls to go with pretty romantic holiday dresses.
