Two months ago, Oprah Winfrey revealed plans to work with Tyler Perry on two original scripted programs for OWN, a first for the network.

Today, OWN released further details on Perry’s contribution to the network via The Hollywood Reporter:

“Haves and the Have Nots is a single-camera effort about the dynamics of the affluent Cyrer family and the impoverished family of their housekeeper, Hanna, and the obstacles and secrets that exist within both families.

Love Thy Neighbor, meanwhile, is a multicamera series set at Love’s Diner, where every day the menu serves up good food, great laughs, valuable life lessons and a lot of love for its zany neighbors.”

The “Haves and the Have Nots” will continue Perry’s theme of the rich vs. the poor (seen prominently in “The Family That Preys”) while “Love Thy Neighbor” sounds like a fresh and perhaps exciting concept.

Perry will write, direct and executive produce both shows, which begin production early next year.

Will you tune in, Clutchettes?

Yeah buddy, things are about to get coontastic over at OWN. Lol!

  • Fantastico

Lol. I hope you’re wrong, but you’re probably not. Damn.

  • sojourner4truth

I’d prefer a few shows from Shonda Rhimes.

  • Erin

They should just make a joined network, and call it OverTime. The O for Oprah and T for Tyler. And the name overtime represents how blacks have struggled, defied the odds overcome. Overtime would also represent thier own struggles and how it took time for them to get where they are.

  • jamaicanbeautyblog

I agree that should do something with Rhimes but maybe Rhimes not interested. Some of the choices on OWN are poor. The only thing going for this station is Super Soul Sunday . The Iyanla thing is not working for me either.

  • Ossuporter

“The have and have nots” sounds good the second one sounds corny but I will check them out. Unlike most, I am rooting for Oprah to succeed!

  • DC Buppie

This is not going to work. Oprah should really have some portion focused on different demographics. (particularly younger as to raise her next generation of viewers) It is so hard to have 100% positive tv. I am happy with the effort though…

  • __A

I’m willing to bet that one of his characters will be the angry, mean, and bougie professional black woman that needs to get in touch with her roots by forming a deep friendship with one of the have nots.

  • Shelly

I’m worried for Mother O. While Tyler Perry’s movies and tv shows are popular, I still think he is not a great writer, but I guess as long as people watch it that won’t matter. Also, all this positive television is wonderful, but I am not sure people are ready for this stuff right now. Maybe if she was on regular cable, but I am not sure people are willing to pay to see programs like these. I hope I am wrong and that she succeeds.

  • Shirl

I’ll give them both a try but if they’re anything like the Browns or For Better or Worse I’m going to be a little disappointed.

  • onegirl

I have to say that I LOVE “For Better or for Worse.” I guess it’s probably because I like Angela. I don’t have OWN, so I won’t be watching Tyler Perry’s new shows.

  • getmelolly

Exactly! Or maybe Shonda should just have her own network?

  • getmelolly

Oh Tyler… stay away from the pen!
He should stick to producing as writing is not his strength… poor ting!

  • Beautiful Mic

I’m excited about this. Oprah is behind some very good films. Hopefully, her involvement will subdue some of the coonery that Perry can bring.

  • Shirl

I tried watching For Better or Worse a few times and just can’t get into it. I’m really desperate for some quality programs for us and about us (not implying white folk shouldn’t be able to watch and enjoy). I hope Tyler knocks it out of the box with these two. I also hope he does not recycle the same actors. It would be nice to see some new faces. I’m sure there is talent out there just waiting to be discovered.

  • Joy

Shirl: To each his own. I enjoyed for Better or Worse. As for The Browns…..not my cup of tea

  • Joy

sojourn: I love Rhimes’ work; but I also know that there is room for more than one (black) writer in Hollywood

  • Joy

I’m going to weigh in on the “Positive” side.I hope both of these shows turn out to be great. Go “O” and Go Tyler. Much success to the shows, and network

  • Naomi

I got a feeling these shows are not gonna live up to its hype. I’m just saying . . . .

  • trinasobad

    OPRAH! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Oprah doesn’t hire me to produce a comedy show .. sorry people that OWN network will fail :(. If anyone knows Oprah tell her to contact me to give that network some life. Her network is geared towards people turning the damn channel. There are plenty of black writers, directors, filmmakers and etc she could give a chance. I wish I had the opportunity, to give her ideas about, getting the cobweb’s out of her nelson rating. Also, she needs put Issa Rae on that network AND LET HER KEEP HER RAWNESS. Oprah needs to realize she needs to get out that Lily white box she’s trying to paint. She better throw more chocolate on that bitch. And have more edgy type shows.
