Tyra Banks has built an empire from her various enterprises in modeling, television and even literature. She is a hugely successful business mogul, regularly topping Forbes’ list of primetime’s top-earning women. She also has an extraordinary education to boot; the former supermodel graduated from Harvard Business School this year. But she feels there is one role missing in her charmed and accomplished life: mommyhood.

Tyra spoke with Harper’s Bazaar Singapore about her burning desire to become a mother: “I want to have kids and I think it needs to happen very soon. I feel like I was born to be the experiment of the definition of beauty and to be a mother.” She continues: “It’s something I have to do. I won’t be happy if I’m not a mother.”

Some women feel societal pressure to become mothers, and believe they are inadequate if they don’t fulfill that role. Tyra, however, seems to view motherhood as a part of her life’s purpose (“I was born…to be a mother”).

We hope she gets her wish. Tyra has the considerable fortune to be able to provide for a child. She also had a strong example of parenting in her mother, Carolyn, who often appeared on “America’s Next Top Model,” to offer wisdom to the contestants.

What are your thoughts on Tyra’s interview, Clutchettes?

  • Mademoiselle

I wish the interviewer had asked my follow up questions: Has she been unhappy through now? What happens if she never makes her goal? Is she only talking about giving birth to children or does it matter if she’s raising an adoptee? What’s her timeline before she settles on being unhappy? Is marriage a condition on having children? What is she doing to get to her goal?

  • Yvette

Why not adopt? I understand that she wants to have a biological child, but there are sooo many children waiting to be adopted – especially BLACK children right here in the U.S.

  • Yvette

Also, what the heck does this mean??

“I feel like I was born to be the experiment of the definition of beauty…”

    I don’t get it…

  • Keepitreal

It’s human nature to want to create your own little creature Lol I hope she finds love, marriage and lots of babies-biologically or adopted.

  • Pseudonym

It could be the fact that she looks like a black American woman and wasn’t hired under the guise of being “exotic” (as were Iman and Naomi Campbell). She worked as an All American black woman. After Beverly Johnson’s era, famous black models tended to be non-American. Also, she was the only model in Victoria’s Secret who had boobs and booty back in the day. and then she was infamous for her big forehead…

I, personally, would give that title to Beverly Johnson, but given the absence of black models during Tyra’s time, I can understand why she feels like a pioneer. I remember her telling stories of how she would have to do her own makeup at times.

Agreed with both of your comments Yvette! When Tyra speaks it is like you need a dictionary for translation. But maybe she should look into adoption if she feels that strongly but sometimes a lot of women want to experience pregnancy so maybe it is a two fold issue.

  • Tim

She’s preparing y’all for the fact that she’s getting ready to be a baby mama.

Successful single Black women in their mid to late 30′s+ looking for successful black ballers need to understand that they are now not those men first choice (preference). All things equal these men would prefer a younger you mid twenties + or minus a couple of years. The best time to look for a husband is when you have the most options and that’s in your Prime.

  • ChillyRoad

If thats how she feels then I can respect that.

  • http://gravatar.com/heavenleiblu heavenleiblu

Welp, it’s not an unusual desire… good luck to her.

  • victoria

IMO, the first sentence of the 3rd paragraph has no place in this article. Tyra expressed a desire to be a mother not pressured to be one.

    Good luck to her!

  • omfg

she graduated from harvard’s executive education program, a three-week gig (over a few years), that gives her alumna status.

it is not a masters or ph.d. imo, this is more a program that helps to capture future donors, already successful people, etc. and give them credibility/social cache; they can say they went to harvard. yay for them…

the only real qualification is that you have a business with sales in the millions of dollars.

but if she wants to be a mother, good for her. she’d better get with someone who wants that too.

  • Ek

I think that the decision to adopt or not is Tyra’s to make and no one should ‘urge her’ in one direction. Otherwise, since we’re 6 billion plus in the world now, no one should be allowed to have a child anymore and we should all adopt. The desire to have a child of one’s own is natural and there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s sad that there are so many underprivileged people in this country but the solution is to encourage each of us to help those in need and not to force people to adopt.

  • Skye (box)

I don’t understand if motherhood is something she really wanted and it seems she’s talking about having her own seeds. Why did she wait so long like I don’t understand Chrissy, Tamar, and Tyra don’t wait till you are 40 to start talking about it. Even if you can have children later in life both women and men the children will be 20 while you are 60+. The ones who are well off seems to wait so long and may have 1. While those who are not have many…

  • Me1987

Hate to be negative but her nose is sooo distracting. I can’t stand it.

  • Apple

Well idk about tomorrow but Chrissy probably waited because she had to basically force Jim to marry her, so it was smart not to have a kid . Maybe Tyra couldn’t find a good partner she thought she could raise kids with

  • victoria

What’s wrong with her nose? She has a pretty nose.

  • LadyDay

In this day and age, the have nots are not having as many, Skye. At least the reasonable ones.

  • MISS_EMCEE

I think Me is stating of that her numerous nose jobs is very distracting.

  • Robbie

I wish Tyra nothing but the best. I hope she finds a man that is ready to settled down and have kids. Not every woman wants to be a baby mama. Many like me believe in marriage, and having a father and a mother living under the same roof.

Not everyone wants to adopt other people’s kids. It is sad that some people take sex so lightly because often times, it leads to unwanted pregnancies and unwanted chlidren. Too often, it is those chlidren that are paying the price. Why should she adopt them if she wants to experience carrying a child and feeling him growth in her belly.

At the end of the day, it is her desicion and her life,I can only worry about mine.

Banks did attend classes on the Harvard Business campus, but they were part of an Owner/President Management extension program and not part of the school’s top-ranked Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.).

Taught in three,three-week units over a period of three years, the non-degree-granting program sets its exclusive “clients” back $33,000 per unit. Upon completion of the program, the clients are presented with a “Certificate of Completion” according to O.P.M.’s Porfolio Director,Jacqueline Baugher. Clients can call themselves “alumni of O.P.M.”

  • simplyme

Well her boyfriend Rob Evans mentioned being ready for kids in an interview recently so we shouldn’t be surprised if she gets pregnant in the near future. Hoping a ring comes first though…

  • simplyme

    She has a man.

  • chinaza

    You’re right.
There’s nothing wrong with her desire but Tyra’s wording sounds silly and rather ungrateful given her age and the successful life she has.

  • http://gravatar.com/chanela17 chanela17

“It could be the fact that she looks like a black American woman”

light skin, green eyes, and tons of nose jobs

yup! sounds like a black woman to me 0_o

  • MISS_EMCEE

If she does get pregnant, I just hope that baby fat doesn’t go to her 8head. I also pray her baby doesn’t acquire that massive dome-piece. That’s like giving birth to Shaq when he was 8 months.

  • Cookie

Sometines, it just doesn’t happen that way. If someone would have told me that I’d be 36 with no kids I would have told them they were crazy! I’m not blaming anyone (including myself) for the way life turned out, sometimes it just takes a little longer for some of us. Maybe that’s what happened with Tyra.

  • Pseudonym

You have a point, but the new crazy nose job Tyra is not the one I grew up with who I am referring to in terms of her looks. In the 90s she still had her real nose and was really cool and normal. (Ever see her on “Fresh Prince?”) People say Hollywood makes people crazy and seeing how she’s gone from “down-to-earth black girl next door eating fried chicken at the cookout” to “ditzy insecure black barbie who always cries,” I’m inclined to agree.

And, yes, there are black women with light skin and there are black women with green eyes. Even with those features and the nose jobs, Tyra looks like many other black American women (esp compared to many of the black models of her time and those that you see today).

  • http://eboniboykin.policymic.com/ eboni

    she should adopt.

  • Nic

Tyra got a nose job but much like the nose jobs that Halle and Beyonce have gotten, they didn’t get “white” noses, so much as giving themselves noses that they weren’t born with but that plenty of other black people have naturally.

And having hazel, light brown, or green eyes, isn’t that special. I’m surprised if you don’t have some cousins with black parents and grandparents who look like Tyra so I don’t find her to be unusual or special looking.

She has kinky hair under her wigs/relaxer, and her skin isn’t very light. So even with the bells and whistle, she screams Black woman to me, esp. her body type.

  • NAME WITHHELD

LOL @ Hate to be negative but her nose is sooo distracting. I can’t stand it.

Honestly, what’s wrong with Tyra’s nose? People used to make fun of her because of her forehead, so now it’s the nose?!

  • Pseudonym

yES! I randomly noticed a few months ago that almost every black woman in Hollywood has the same Michael Jackson nose. What’s up with that?!!! At least boobs and butt emphasize secondary sex characteristics. I barely notice the difference with the new noses and the new noses don’t make any of these women look more attractive or less black or more white. It’s strange…

  • http://VerityReign.com Verity Reign

I love Tyra and I wish her the best! I think she’ll be a fabulous mother! She’s been in the industry since a teen and has carried herself exceptionally well through it all! In regards to the few commentators discussing her nose, get a life and grow up! Tyra is beautiful. It’s really sad that someone ALWAYS has to find the negative in EVERYTHING! It’s freakin’ Tyra Banks, one of the most successful supermodels in history and now a business mogul! Who cares about her nose? Smh. Please stop with the ignorance, and just pay respect where respect is due! As women we’re our own worst enemy.
