There was no shortage of gowns to ogle at on the SAG Awards red carpet this Sunday. From Kerry Washington’s white Rodarte gown to Viola Davis’ striking teal Monique Lhuillier dress, glamour was everywhere you turned. But the look that we were most fixated on last night was that of Teyonah Parris. The “Mad Men” star dazzled in a one-shoulder purple gown and dangling earrings worn with a beautiful natural hair updo. Here are only five reasons we loved her look:

1. The style is unique.

We’ve seen pompadours and French rolls galore but Teyonah Parris’ style incorporated a roll and a bun in a fresh way.

2. The execution was flawless.

From her French roll to her bun to her sleek sides, there was not a hair out of place in Teyonah’s spectacular ‘do.

3. It’s easy to recreate.

Though it looks exquisite and polished, Parris’ look is fairly easy to replicate. You can separate hair on the crown to the top of your head and create it a French roll by twisting and securing with bobby pins. Brush the sides and the back into a ponytail then twist and wrap hair around in a full bun.

4. The look was elegant.

Some critics would have you believe natural hair can’t work for formal events, but few hairstyles were as elegant, regal and sophisticated as Parris’ yesterday evening.

5. You don’t see it enough.

It was refreshing and exciting to see natural hair represented so beautifully on the red carpet. We felt the same way when we first laid eyes on Viola Davis’ TWA at the Oscars (she also rocked hers last night). Diversity in terms of texture and style at Hollywood’s most glamorous events is always welcome.

What did you think of Teyonah Parris’ hairstyle last night, Clutchettes?

That is absolutely beautiful. With that said…seems like Jet, Ebony and Essence did a great job showing us beautiful black women before the 90s rolled around. Cause these images are rare now days. Or maybe I don’t know where to look for them.

I agree with all 5 of these reasons. I love this style, especially since it’s an even more diva rendition of I style I was trying out a few months ago. Perfect execution!!! Gotta try it again when my hair grows back out.

I think she made the kind of impact with that elegant natural updo hairdo, that Michelle Obama did sporting her new bangs for last week’s Inauguration. Black women everywhere are talking about it and loving it.
