Just in time for Black History Month, Lifetime will premiere its new made-for-television film Betty & Coretta on February 2nd.
The highly anticipated film, which stars Angela Bassett and Mary J Blige, centers around the lives Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz after the tragic assassinations of their husbands, Dr. Martin Luther King and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (b.k.a. Malcolm X).
“When their husbands were tragically assassinated, these two women not only inherited the mantle of the civil rights movement in America, each also found herself to be a single mother who had to find a way to raise and support her children with no husband or father, resulting in a relationship like no other that spanned more than three decades,” Lifetime detailed in a press release.
Bassett, who will be playing the wife of Dr. King, is no rookie to the storyline. She played the wife of fellow civil rights leader Malcolm X in the 1995 film Panther and the 1992 hit Malcolm X.
Along with starring as Dr. Shabazz, Blige is working behind the camera. She’s executive producing the film, which will also have appearances by Malik Yoba and Lindsay Owen Pierre.
