The media consistently thinks of black women in relation to a handful of topics: being single, sisterhood (or the lack of it) and the status of our physical health. But you rarely hear about black women and self-esteem. A healthy love of self is the foundation for finding contentment and happiness in life. Miki Turner, an award-winning photojournalist featured in Essence and Ebony Magazines, is giving attention to that oft-ignored part of our personal development with her latest tome, Journey to the Woman I’ve Come to Love via The Grio.
The photo book features arresting images of phenomenal women of all races, backgrounds and professions alongside inspirational quotes about self-acceptance. Robin Roberts, Angela Davis, Gladys Knight, Della Reese, Judith Jamison, Sanaa Lathan and Halle Berry are among the women featured.
While gathering inspirational quotes, Miki asked the women: “At what point did you fall in love with yourself?”
Halle Berry answered saying: “i would probably say that i fell in love with myself after my second divorce. i think it was at that time that i realized what i was made of. i realized that i was enough all by myself.”
Turner told The Grio she hopes the book will leave women feeling “inspired and empowered. I hope that they can look at some of these women who are more like them, the women who aren’t celebrated, to see what they had to do to reach inside themselves, and find whatever it’s going to take to fully love themselves.”
