Yesterday, after six seasons and 111 episodes, ABC’s hit drama series Private Practice aired its final episode. Taye Diggs, who played Dr. Sam Bennett, said the ending has been bittersweet.
“To be honest, I have mixed feelings. I feel like we’ve had a wonderful opportunity, and what we have has been special and different and unique. I feel very blessed to have worked with such an amazing cast,” he said. “Then story-wise, I feel like we’ve, as sad as it will be for a lot of us to leave, I feel like the show has run its course. Personally, I feel like I have gotten a chance to tell some really great stories and it’s just time for the next chapter. So it feels right to me.”
The season finale ended with Kate Walsh’s character, Dr. Addison Montgomery, marrying Benjamin Bratt’s character, Dr. Jake Reilly, which ended her love triangle with Dr. Benentt.
Executive producer Shonda Rhimes revealed that the show would be coming to an end in October.
“There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line,” she wrote in a message on her company’s website. “It’s heartbreaking to end. Truly. I feel so lucky to write for these characters and tell these stories and I truly feel this show has taught me so much as a writer. And there’s a family here, of crew and cast, people who have bonded over these past five and a half seasons.”
There’s no word yet on what Diggs’ next project will be, but he says he’s looking forward to the next chapter.
“In all honestly we are all fortunate and we realize how blessed we have been to be on a well-liked show for this long,” he said. “I am ready to move on.”
