“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” – Carl Jung

Welp, the New Year has come and gone, and many people are starting on their long list of resolutions and goals hoping to finally change their lives. While most people’s intentions are noble, a few months from now, things might not seem so clear.

So how can you stay on track and ensure that 2013 is the year you finally breakthrough?

It’s simple: set a clear vision and always keep it in your mind.

Last summer I had the opportunity to chat with Iyanla Vanzant, and I couldn’t resist asking her how I could achieve the things my heart hopes for most. Her advice? Keep your vision alive.

She schooled me:

“A goal is an intellectual concept—can you see it? ‘Cuz if you can’t see it within you then you’re never going to accomplish it,” she said.

“What’s your vision? The vision will pull you forward. The goal will keep you busy.”

One way to “see” your vision is through mind mapping and creating a vision board. Although it seems very new agey, vision boards have been instrumental in my life over the past few years, and have helped me go from a job I hated, to the career that I love.  I believe in them so much that I’m hosting an event later this month to teach others how to turn their dreams into reality (and yes, if you’re in L.A. you can come).

Getting clear about what we really want from our lives can be tough. We may get distracted by what we think we should want, living up to the expectations of others, or not really knowing the path we want to take.

But getting clear about what you want to be known for and the type of life you’d like to live (regardless of your job) and physically writing it down (or making a vision board/collage), is a great way to stay on track and finally achieve your goals.

Happy Monday, Clutchettes!

Have you or are you creating a vision board for the New Year?

  1. I am going to do a vision board with my sister this weekend. I have had a lot of goals and visions for years, but I’m having a hard time getting everything together. I feel like this is the year. And oh my gosh, a few minutes ago, someone read me that Carl Jung quote from a completely unrelated source. I feel like God is trying to tell me something.

Earlier today, I was watching a youtube video and someone mentioned making a vision board. Now I’m hearing it from you, so maybe these are signs. I will make one geared toward what I want to accomplish during this semester of school.
