Michelle Obama and Big Bird

The last time we heard Big Bird’s name in politics was when Mitt Romney made a snuff at cutting subsidies to PBS during one of the presidential debates. But now the yellow puppet that we’ve come to love from Sesame Street is back on Capitol Hill — this time to support the First Lady with a new fitness campaign.

Big Bird will be featured in two new public service announcements as a part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, which helps Americans fight childhood obesity. The ads, which feature the muppet roaming through the White House and eyeing fresh fruits and veggies in the presidential kitchen, will be distributed to 320 public broadcasting stations.

The First Lady also plans to start a national tour next week for her health and fitness program, as this year marks the third anniversary since it’s inception.

Perhaps, it’s an underhanded jab at the GOP — but we’re glad that Big Bird’s resurfaced and is finally getting some love under the political spotlight.

  • I LOVE this campaign! With so much on her plate as First lady, I respect the initiative Michelle Obama takes towards nutrition and fitness, and I’m excited to see she has taken to my childhood friends on Sesame Street to spread the good word! Starting at a young age is crucial in health education, and her “Let’s Move” Campaign should be supported in schools and homes across America!
