Fantasia has been the subject of harsh criticism in the public eye for everything from admitting her illiteracy to being involved with a married man who eventually betrayed her. When news hit that she had attempted suicide, many of us wondered if she’d ever be able to find peace. She also recently posted about gay marriage in a rant about being judged, that many took issue with.

The American Idol winner recently sat down with Jet Magazine for an interview in which she muses about self-love and raising her children, and appears to be in a better place:

On self-discovery:
“I am finally able to love myself. The main thing I wanted in life was peace and freedom; the ability to let go…You could say the stage saved me because when I’m in front of people I carry my pain and soul…That is my salvation.”

On living single:
“I’m single and happy. I have a great relationship with both of my children’s fathers… If you catch me with either of them, we are not together— we are just being good parents. All I’m focused on right now is music and my kids.”

As positive as the interview sounds, her work with the magazine is not without its share of drama.

The singer erupted on Instagram, chastising the magazine for using an old photograph of her:

This saddens Me!!! It is clear that this picture is 10 Years Old and JET Magazine puts it on the Cover!! After I send them the NEW LOOK AND DIRECTION. . SAD!!! I WANT A PUBLIC APOLOGY FROM JET. Now im not sure if the interview is correct. SEE!! America they and use me as they crash Dummy BUT NO MORE. IF I DONT STAND FOR SOMETHING ILL FALL FOR ANYTHING.

Fantasia is certainly not perfect — none of us are — but I can’t help but feel her outburst is in poor taste. It’s sad that the cover story’s message of self-love and freedom is shrouded in conflict due to her airing dirty laundry on social media.

What do you think about Fantasia’s comments, Clutchettes?

  • Julie

    I wouldn’t know it was 10 years old….

  • J. Nicole

    Oh ‘Tasia… ‘Tasia, ‘Tasia, ‘Tasia…

This is what urks me about Instagram & Twitter usage for celebrities that should have a PR team on them ’round the clock. What ever happened to “have your people call my people”? Shouldn’t her manager or agent have contacted Jet magazine about this, opposed to an exaggerated, rant? A “crash dummy”…. Oh ‘Tasia. I feel bad for her, but she should let her team handle this.

  • http://Wynn Wynning

I’m curious about her new look

  • CeeCee

(rolls eyes). Fantasia should just be happy that she is on the cover.

  • heavenleiblu

  • miz scarletts mammy

she is a homely chile; doubt that she has improved during the last ten years. prolly looked better then. needs to sit down and be quiet….

  • Jacob

Ya’ll please! Stop FREAKING hating..I’m soo tired of you judgemental, self centered a** ppl.. Its only accurate that the PIC IS OLD! skip she should just be happy she on the cover crap! This would NOT have happened to Beyonce and the other pretty chicks! Who the HECK does that! Fantasia has grown into a woman and beautiful at that, she has EVERY RIGHT TO BE UPSET, AND EVERY RIGHT TO SPEAK OUT! You mf’s will be beating a different toon if it were you..H*ll.. they put up a highschool pic and the woman dang near 30… Don’t bash her! This is the madness she is talking about! Losers!

  • Willoughby Chislyn

If she sent them a current pic, why would they dig up an old ten year old ass pic and put it on the cover? Tay has every right to be angry. I’m sure Jet wouldn’t have done this to rihanna or beyonce. so those of you saying she need to be happy or whatever, Tay has graced the cover of jet plenty of times. This is not her first cover and they should have used the pic they gave her.

  • E. L. Harris (@JabberJustice)

Why did they use old photos of her? It is disrespectful to her as an artist! it makes no sense, and I don’t blame Fantasia. I did not see it as an outburst. She’s lamenting the feeling of being disrespected again. I will make sure I don’t buy this Jet!

  • Ash

I don’t like the way she addressed it was right HOWEVER…why should she stay quiet just because she’s not a big star like “Beyonce”? So what, that doesn’t mean they can treat her any type of way?! No! Her people need to be more involved in what goes out. The cover should have been approved.

  • MimiLuvs

    I have questions…
What’s wrong with the picture that Jet Magazine used? She still looks the same.
What is so special about the ‘new direction’ picture? What? She is wearing a new wig?

  • Mindy

    I totally agree!!

  • DownSouth Transplant

    Ma’am, MA’AM….

  • Monique

This is a slap in the face. She is not that person from 10 years ago. She has evolved, and her picture should reflect her as the person she is today!!

  • Jenn M. Jackson

I kind of feel her on that. It takes a lot of work to develop your brand. And, if she has changed her hair or styling since then, she would want that reflected on everything she does now.

Also, Jet is super rude for not sending her the final cut of any images or interviews they publish. That is very unprofessional.

I don’t think she should have taken to Instagram about it though.

  • CleanUpOnAisle5

People still read Jet? Nope, I wouldn’t want a 10-yr pic of myself plastered on a magazine cover, either. It’s not a bad pic, but I certainly feel her frustration. Self-love,however, doesn’t cause one to ‘blow up’ or ‘show out’ in public, either…*shrugs*

  • Facts

I get why she’s upset. She feels that the media, esp. Black media uses her as a laughing stock / target for ridicule, and posting an old picture of her wearing finger waves was an extension of that.

  • Facts

With the ugly way you talk about another person, I doubt you’re giving off the essence of Miss Black America yourself.

  • q. banks

she didnt like the pic bc she looks like she had some slight medical enhancements and a new “do”…you know when they become celebs they get all kids of cosmetic procedures

  • q. banks

all kinds of surgical procedures. she looks a LOT better now, that pic they used was old and she wanted to showcase her new self

  • sapphiresandsisters

I love Jet Mag for their legacy and for the documentation that they have done for Black people, but as of recently…. I haven’t felt their direction and content. Fantasia aside, that’s just out of poor taste. And I definitely don’t think they would’ve done that to other artists. C’mon, Jet. Yall gotta show some respect.

  • RKJ

It doesn’t make sense to me journalistically to use a 10 year old picture when you’re doing an “update story”. Wouldn’t you want all components of that story to be fresh, images and text? That would be like doing a feature story on Alicia Keys’ new album and using a stock photo of her in those long cornrows.

  • Overseas_Honeybee

@ash. Agreed. Before anything went to press …. she or her team should have had eyes on it. Somebody would have lost their job if that happened to Bey or Rihanna etc. She does have a right to be upset but it could have been handled better. Wonder what was behind the decision to use an old photo? I’ve seen her recently in newer photos and she looked good.

  • GangStarrGirl

People who don’t work In publishing with an opinion on publishing, sigh. One, it’s called pick up art and a lot of magazines do it. Two, several celebrities throw tantrums when they don’t like a pic, you have no idea how bratty some of these folks are unless you work in entertainment as opposed to browsing blogs. But even through the outburst, the professional ones handle it in private via a publicist. Fanny isn’t the first celeb to not like a cover shot but she handled this wrong. Three, sometimes the pics they want just ain’t hot. That is all.

  • Somebody

Good point! People may not like her as much as the so-called pretty girls but she deserves the same respect when it comes to business including but not limited to magazine covers. If they didn’t think her new look was good enough, they just shouldn’t have used her.

  • Mae Hammett

Most of us did not know her 10yrs ago.

  • lil ray

Glad she is standing up for herself, she felt wronged and said something about it
More black women need to speak out when they have been hurt stop setting back and taking it.

  • CCN

    Things that don’t matter.

She looks fabulous in that picture, and not much different than what I’ve seen of her lately, IMO.

  • CCN

However, could her recent look involve her having gone natural? Did she go natural? And did JET Magazine shy away from using her most recently submitted photo because of THAT?

  • ToughLovetoT

AS your fans, we love you. We support you. I think as a start, take your disagreements/frustrations to the boardroom and off social media. You are well in your rights. I do think America will use you if you continue to allow them. They assume where you come from and your journey that you will just settle for anything. As you stated, “NO More” – so show them by (not telling) them on social media, if not, America, people and Jet will consider your statement as yet another complaint. And going forward: Please by ALL means…

Stop! Stop it NOW!! Pls don’t give any additional (personal) information to the public to feed off of. This was NONE of their business “I’m single and happy. I have a great relationship with both of my children’s fathers… If you catch me with either of them, we are not together— we are just being good parents..” By doing this, you provide a continued platform to be utilized as a crash dummy. America will take the negative and expand on it before they will the positive especially when they already have some negative spaces to work from. Now you may hear conversations or articles about the negativity aspects of your relationships with your children’s father (which is not needed). Yes, we can’t stop nasty things from being spoken, but we can control how we are treated. So I agree with stating your dislike about the photo, but I just wish it was discussed in person. If it’s your PR teams’ fault (hire a better team), America is still coming after you.

Keep going, Tasia! Stay on top and don’t let it get you down. At the same time, demand the type of respect you deserve. Jet was wrong, but they may not have actually realized how much it may have bothered you. Now they know, but let them know exactly how serious you are by addressing the issue in person.

  • bass (@BassCampbell)

jet is so wrong for that i will not buy another magazine from them

  • Ashley.

Lmfaooooo, that’s exactly what I thought! Esp since the article doesn’t appear to be a salacious, disparaging article, with no input from her.

  • chancy

Alot of Celebs do this to be relevant
