Laquan Smith’s Fall 2013 Collection Pays Homage to Bond Girls and Grace Jones

Laquan Smith, the New York-based designer, who boasts fans in celebrities like Andre Leon Talley and Rihanna, finds inspiration in varied places for his collections. One season, he selected a water goddess as his muse; another he was inspired by his travels and a particularly beautiful garden in France. This season, his point of reference is closer to our hearts: Bond Girls, ’90s Lil Kim and Grace Jones (her character Strangé in “Boomerang”).
The outcome is just as deliciously bold as unapologetically sexy as you’d expect. In a color palette of black and white (save for red Walter Steiger pumps and a single red sheath dress), Laquan showed a laser-cut leather turtleneck jumpsuit, a tight white pencil skirt decorated with the “Laquan Smith” name in patent leather lettering and a crop top and high waisted skirt in star print.
His collection took a more conservative turn with a long sleeve minidress and a belted coat with fur accents on the hem, sleeves and cuff. We’d imagine it’d be what Lil Kim or Grace Jones might wear if they ever had to attend a corporate office party.
Known for his attention to detail, Laquan worked the beauty look into his bad-ass inspiration as the models rocked upswept pin curls for a retro feel with a sassy dark plum lip for a contemporary flair. He completed the look with cool black and white nails that featured the season’s hottest nail art.

grace jones is still alive….somewhere out there
So are you inferring that it is inappropriate to pay homage to someone while they are still alive?
