Who Needs Pants Anyways?

by Yesha Callahan

Well, some of us do, and I’m definitely one of them. This week at the premiere of “Beyonce: Life Is But A Dream”, Solange Knowles strutted her stuff in what appears to be a shirt. The white micro mini showed off her amazing legs, and the minimalist look wasn’t compromised by a simple pair of black heels.

Maybe the “no pants” look is something that will be all of the rage this summer. Even Lena Dunham attempted to pull of the look last year.

lenadunham

How short is too short? I know I wouldn’t be able to pull off such a look. At 5’10 and with enough butt to share, it just isn’t feasible. It’s hard enough to find regular mini-dresses that won’t turn out looking like tunics, but doing it purposefully just isn’t going to happen.

Clutchettes, is this a fashion statement you’re willing to try?

  • AJW

    Yes!
    That was easy. :-)

  • Orange Starr Happy Hunting

That ish is ridiculous on anyone unless you on a beach somewhere with a swimsuit underneath. Now I’m all for being modern, sexy, and fashion forward but a lil modesty never hurts either.

  • AJW

    Of course I was joking.

But seriously, soon people will be butt naked walking around & it won’t be pretty.

  • AJW

    It does look silly.

  • Sasha

    Solange- yes.
Lena Dunham- no. actually maybe a yes but not that short. never ever again that short.

  • lil ray

The shirt dress look is not new it’s very early 80s style.
with any trend some can pull it off like Solange and others like Lena can’t.

  • Sasha

Lena’s new haircut is definitely a do but everytime I’ve seen her in pictures lately, it leaves me to wonder whether she has a stylist and if not whether she’s considered hiring one. Its like she dresses in the dark and/or doesn’t know what works for her body.

  • http://gravatar.com/jamesfrmphilly jamesfrmphilly

    body? what body?

  • http://gravatar.com/jamesfrmphilly jamesfrmphilly

never take your gun out of it’s holster unless you plan on shooting somebody…

  • Sasha

Hahaha stop James!! On the real though, anyone whose ever seen any of my comments about this girl know I think her body/ shape is repulsive and find her to be shaped like the Barney Bag BUT that’s just my opinion. With the right clothes, anyone can look like a million bucks.

  • http://gravatar.com/missinformation7 Ms. Information

Dress for your body type…doing so flatters your figure…..Solange has the legs and shape, Lena, not so much…I would never even dare, lol.

  • Apple

Not People without security guards, I could dare consider it or even short shorts because men are too thirsty and think that gives them the rights to harrass yell grop and grab on you :-/

  • Jo

This look on Solange and Lena looks unfinished. Solange definitely rocks it better but I keep looking at the photo thinking, “Where is the rest of the outfit?” If the shirt hem was even all the way around, this “mini dress” (but let’s be real that dress is JUST a shirt trying to pass as a dress lol) would look less like a shirt. Lena unfortunately hasn’t found her style (complete agree w/ Sasha about her dressing in the dark regularly) and the mini shirt dress isn’t it either. I think this trend is going to be tragic if the masses latch on. *covering eyes* lol

I think it’s not the best idea, but I must say I have NEVER been a fan of pants. They come off as soon as I walk in the door. I used to tell my BFF, I wish I was a duck (or Pooh or some other Disney character) because they don’t have to wear pants. Lol.

  • http://gravatar.com/jamesfrmphilly jamesfrmphilly

what is the reason that some women want to show their flesh?

what functional purpose does it serve? it makes sense for the whore on the street because she is selling it. but why give it out for free?

i hope that these women do not feel that their flesh is primarily what they bring to the table. that would be a shame. every year there is a crop of new cute young femmes arriving on the scene. flesh is pretty common and available.

true self knowledge would make our black women aware that they are SO MUCH MORE than a chouch. that self knowledge and self esteem is inside. if you learn how to look inward and access it you will feel no need to show your butte on the street.

  • omfg

    solange looks great.

    lena, not so much.

  • http://gravatar.com/mbm1ame isa

I love Solange and if I had her legs I would also rock that outfit, (doubt if I could afford) as for Lena, ……no comment

  • I wonder…

I personally wouldn’t rock the look, but if I had legs like Solange…Anyway, I think it’s interesting what we seem as suitable for some places and not so suitable for others. Is it short? Hell yeah! But I don’t see the big deal because it’s not like she’s going to an office dressed like this. What’s the difference between wearing something really short at the beach or during the summer and a party?

  • I wonder…

Ya’ll need to stop with the Lena D. comments! Lol! We are up in arms that the media gives our girls impossible beauty standards when it comes to being super thin, yet here we have an actress who looks like most American women (which I should remind you that the average AW is like a size 14) and ya’ll are trashing her. She’s comfortable with her body, and that is all that should matter!

  • http://Clutch SL

Lena should think twice about trying to sport this particular style.

  • steff

i love solange, she’s very beautiful but this look isnt for me . . .

  • http://gravatar.com/nolakiss16 binks

Honestly it depends on the style and length of the shirt. Solange gets a pass because her shirt doesn’t look like a “shirt” but looks like it could double as a dress (though it could have been a tab bit longer) while Lena straight up looks like she forgot her pants. As mention, only time I would try and do this trend is at a beach.

  • Chillyroad

Try high waist. Emphasises the waist and its a clean look.

  • Chillyroad

Very true but she should dress better.

  • Pseudonym

Getting dressed isn’t always about “showing” to other people. Wearing something short for me, is seeing the fruits of running 15 miles/week. I look strong and healthy and I like it. It’s the same as for why I don’t “protective style” my hair. I want to see it. Others seeing my clothes and hair is just passive occurrence bc I don’t live in this world alone.

If I had my choice, I’d probably walk around almost naked bc I look best that way (I’m petite so clothes often take away from my physique and make it look less good via being too big/boxy/wide rather than compliment it and make it look better.) I don’t bc I do acknowledge that I will be seen by others’ eyes.

So,no, wearing short stuff doesn’t mean my body is all I have to offer. My body is not even considered “up for offer” so when I get dressed (for anything other than a hot date, where my body is up for offer), other people are not in mind.

  • P

Solange legs…yeah! She can wear that outfit! I love showing off mine, but I don’t think I will wear just a shirt.

  • Treece

Exactly what I was thinking…..I would only probably rock this look at the beach on vacation or something. Swimsuit underneath, pair of nice wedge sandals. Otherwise people would tend to think you went senile and didn’t finish getting dressed in the morning (like Ms. Dunham).

  • Deb

Yes but when she doesn’t, her style can be critiqued but tearing her body apart because she doesn’t look close to perfect (skinny or “curvy”) contributes to the problem. There are ALOT of women all over the world with legs like Lena.

  • Deb

Solange never ceases to impress me with her style. I don’t believe she has a stylist which is even more impressive to me.

  • http://gravatar.com/jamesfrmphilly jamesfrmphilly

“when I get dressed other people are not in mind”

since we live in a world full of other people perhaps they should be in mind? as a courtesy?

  • http://gravatar.com/jamesfrmphilly jamesfrmphilly

    “I love showing off mine”

why? what do you get from ‘showing off’?

  • Wanda

These young women look like they just came from a sleepover.

  • Orange Starr Happy Hunting

This thing called appropriateness, even for an evening out, without bodyguards this look may be a lil hazardous in more ways than one.

  • P

Oh, I did say “showing off”. It’s really being proud of what I have, so I don’t see a reason to hide it. Leave something to the imagination, but I think there’s nothing wrong with dressing to accent your best body parts.

  • http://gravatar.com/pinklipstick227 pinklipstick227

I love Solange’s look. I just wish her shirt/dress was a bit longer.

  • The Other Jess

No shade, but Lena Dunham should NEVER EVER show her legs again. On the other hand, Solange looks great!

  • Pseudonym

Exactly. That’s why I’m not walking around completely naked. However a dress like the above at a premier is appropriate. Now, if she was wearing that to church or to Saudi Arabia, I could see taking issue with it. I mean, there’s no cleavage or butt peeks or anything. All you see are her legs. What exactly is she revealing in that dress? I’m sure there was more butt and boob showing in whatever Beyoncé wore.

  • london via africa

lena dunham should continue to wear shorts everyday of her life, if only to silence people like yourselves who think shorts or mini skirts are only for those with slim cellulite free legs.
lena is happy and seems healthy so let the chick rock what she likes, don’t like it then look away.

  • http://gravatar.com/jamesfrmphilly jamesfrmphilly

‘bey was covered, skintight but covered…

  • http://gravatar.com/jamesfrmphilly jamesfrmphilly

“dressing to accent your best body parts”

here is where i get confused. i can see showing off to your BF or even in da club to attract a potential BF. but why do you want to ‘show off’ to the ENTIRE WORLD?

why are sisters ‘showing off’ on the street to everybody? young, old, cats, dogs, strangers? what does the women get from showing to everyone?

in my time, i only took my stuff out when i was going to use it.

  • MommieDearest

“Where is the rest of the outfit?” If the shirt hem was even all the way around, this “mini dress” (but let’s be real that dress is JUST a shirt trying to pass as a dress lol) would look less like a shirt.

My thoughts exactly. It looks like her house caught fire and she didn’t have time to put her pants on before she ran out.

    GREAT shoes though.

  • Child, Please

Solange is going to have me walking a$$ out come spring! She is giving me too much “Yeah, I;m sexxxy!” tease and I love it! I love her hair, too!

  • GlowBelle

Some trends just don’t fit everybody, and this is one of them. Solange looks great, and I give both her and Lena D props for daring to do, but I could NEVER do this out in public. I’d always feel like I was missing something and since I’m always forgetting stuff when I go out anyways I’d hate to have that feeling concerning my clothes, lol.

  • Pseudonym

I wouldn’t consider skin tight to where people can make out your cup size and but size “covered up.” It would take more imagination to visualize Solange’s breast and butt shape in the outfit above than if she were in a skin tight dress. The key word in “skin tight” is “skin,” after all. It basically means the outfit was so tight it might as well have been skin…and skin=naked=not really covered.

  • Joy

Lena needs to cover up that cellulite. Comfortable with herself or not; no one else wants to see that.

  • Joy

AJW: I’m not trying to be mean….but it’s already not pretty. Have you seen the number of women walking around with arms the size of thighs? It’s unreal….fat arms that is

  • http://gravatar.com/jamesfrmphilly jamesfrmphilly

what will happen is some little high schooler will get on the subway dressed like that because she thinks it’s ok now.

  • Mademoiselle

The facts: Solange is beautiful; she has a nice figure; that shirt looks well made. My opinion: I could’ve done without seeing this, but I’ll keep this idea in mind for one day when I’m married & I want my husband to come home to a nice surprise that wouldn’t embarrass me if he forgot to tell me he was bringing guests home.

  • Pseudonym

Yeah, Lena broke rules of the super-short shirtdress: (1) wear high heels and (2) don’t wear a frumpy shirt. That shirt would look bad even if accompanied with slacks or a pair of jeans; it looks worn out and ill-fitting. Her shoes look like faded house slippers. Her hair isn’t done. I’m pretty sure she looks exactly the same way every morning 2 minutes after waking up as she shuffles over to kitchen to put on a pot of Folgers.

  • Ms. Vee

Solange looks amazing. Her legs and hair are on point.

  • AM

    @ j-philly,

I’m literally DYING over here! In your days, you took out what to use where?!?!?! I’m done! BURIED and gone to heaven, meet me there for our weekly Friday date night

  • Kema

I have a dress like that in black. Its short but I’ve seen girls come out in a leotard and heels.

  • Kema

I don’t like pants either. I wear skirts & dresses most of the time and spandex the rest.

  • Anthony

Solange’s legs look so good, I am tempted to volunteer to carry all of her pants to Goodwill on her behalf!

As for Lena Dunham, all I can say is that it’s her body, if wants to show it, she can.

  • dana111

That is the girl’s parents responsibility, is it not? Solange does not have to be a role model for anyone…

  • Echi

So…how do you come out of a car, dodge on coming traffic, bend down to pick up a lost dollar or climb on to a bar stool with this no pants look? It looks like the fashion world is competing on how best to make woman’s clothes impractical for everything but a ten second red carpet photo shoot.

Both of these looks would great with a pair of OPAQUE tights.

  • Mademoiselle

She has enough fabric to do all of that, assuming she doesn’t lead her life with her legs wide open. Keep your knees together and swing both legs out of the car at the same time (same for going in), don’t play in traffic (not sure why she would need to dodge it otherwise), keep your knees together & squat straight down, and slide onto the stool with both buttcheeks instead of one at a time and either cross your legs or cross your ankles.

To be clear, any woman in a skirt or dress could have a wardrobe malfunction if she’s not paying attention to her leg spread. I had to subliminally tell a lady on the train the other day to close her legs, and she was wearing a knee length skirt. (I did it by doing one of those look away glances at her, then looking down at myself as if to check if I was exposed too, and squeezing my legs and placing my purse in my lap as if I needed extra coverage to avoid calling attention to her on the crowded subway, in case you were wondering. She got the message.)

  • The Moon in the Sky

You know, that has always been my issue with women’s clothes and shoes – They, women’s clothes are impractical.

  • P

“why are sisters ‘showing off’ on the street to everybody? young, old, cats, dogs, strangers? what does the women get from showing to everyone?”

    Perhaps for attention..

Cats, dogs – that part was funny, too.

  • Toni

I show it off because I can. I like the way I look in my clothes. I’ve got great tits. I’ve got great legs. I’ve got an amazing itty bitty waist and ample hips, thighs and backside. I’m not advertising my wares, but why hide it because it makes you uncomfortable? I’m a fan of being ‘secret’ sexy. You’re being difficult, but I’m sure you can figure out what I mean. I’m not a whore. I’m not attention starved. I just like what I like, and I have the freedom to wear it. If it be tight, low cut, short (not all at the same time)… SO FREAKING WHAT?

  • http://twitter.com/onotse Onotse (@onotse)

She looks amazing and those shoes are everything!!

  • http://gravatar.com/heavenleiblu heavenleiblu

They both look silly to me; although it looked slighly better on Solange, it wasn’t exactly flattering on her at all angles. Either wear a dress or wear something on your lower half and stop half stepping.

  • http://gravatar.com/heavenleiblu heavenleiblu

It’s impressive that she can dress herself?
