Yes, yes and more yes! Fans of early 90s hip hop will be happy to know that De La Soul will be releasing a new album this year and their first single “Get Away” (featuring the Spirit of the Wu) is already available in these here internet streets.
Pos explained to Rolling Stone how the “featuring the Spirit of the Wu” part of the title came about. “I stumbled on the original sample while crate digging one day, took it straight to the lab and added drums. The feel is definitely gritty, hard and sounds like a Wu record, so out of inspirational respect, we included featuring ‘The Spirit of the Wu’ in the song title,” said Pos.
That’s a very admirable gesture to give Wu-Tang a nod and he’s absolutely right. The track does have that dark, ghostly, head noddin’ vibe that people associate with the Wu. Lyrics-wise, “Get Away” takes a few general shots at today’s redundant, uninspiring hip hop landscape. The single is the first track that is part of a monthly track release project. De La Soul will be releasing all of the tracks via YouTube and social media, which is interesting considering that some of those social media platforms didn’t even exist when De La dropped their last new track in 2004.
The group’s next album will be released in the late fall with the appropriate title “You’re Welcome.” Surely, their fans will offer a hearty “thank you.”
What do you think of De La Soul’s new track?
Oh and on a side note, have you heard “Bird’s Eye View?” Black Thought slays his verse.
