Detroit Dad Defends Daughter Against Online Predator

by Demetria Irwin

Antoine Martin Antoine Martin of Detroit took matters into his own hands when he discovered a grown man sending inappropriate messages to his 13-year-old daughter on Facebook. In a set-up similar to Chris Hansen’s “To Catch a Predator” series, Martin posed as his own daughter online and invited the 22-year-old to his home.

When the man arrived, Martin performed a citizen’s arrest and videotaped a confession before handing him over to the police.  “He came with condoms in his pocket, and I have a video of him saying I came to have sex with your daughter,” Martin told local news station WJBK.

Hands behind his back and visibly shaken in the video, the suspect tells Martin of his intentions and makes it known that he doesn’t want his deed to go public. The suspect is affiliated with the local Boys and Girls Club where Martin’s daughter spends time after school. That’s where she met the suspect.

Kudos to dad for protecting his daughter, being aware of her social media activities, realizing that the grown man is the guilty party (Don’t you hate when stories like this pop up and it becomes about how “fast” the young girl is?) and for keeping a cool head. He performed a citizen’s arrest instead of shooting that man on sight. That’s a healthy dose of restraint and was a wise decision. Good thing Martin opted to not  harm the suspect because he needs to stay out of prison so he can continue to be an awesome dad.

What do you think about Antoine Martin’s actions? Had that been your daughter, how would you have handled that?

SMH, so trifling, but so glad this Dad protected his daughter.
You have to be an involved and hands on parent monitoring online activity and knowing who is around your children, really at all times.

If I could ever be so thoughtful and professional and calm. Cause I would have just beat him bloody. Did a Lorena Bobbitt on his punk azz. Then both of us would have gone to jail. I wish I could be like him.

he is a hero to me!

  • Tammy

    Great parenting!

What a great dad! Glad he was proactive, unlike some fathers who whip their kids after the fact.

Sad that this 22 year old is supposed to work with children, and he’s grooming them for his own pleasure. This dad needs to teach classes to other fathers!

  • ChaCha1

That predator met her at the Boys and Girls Club? That’s scary.

Now this is an example of being a good father. Protecting, being there for your child, and caring. Good job.

  • P

Yes! I absolutely love what this father did. Now this is the story we need on EVERY outlet. True parenting within my book. I hope this story goes viral.

“Martin needs to stay out of prison so he can continue to be an awesome dad”

Was he in prison? Is he going to prison? Did i miss something? Just wondering because i didnt see that in the story.

uhm, if he had whooped the predator out of that guy, he would definitely be in jail.

  • http://www.thesls.blogspot.com Teddy

I think she means he needs to keep practicing restraint so he won’t end up in prison rather than go off and hurt the guy and be behind bars.

Now THAT is an example of parenting done right.

  • DEE

This is great. All parents should be knowledgeable of whats going on with their children’s social networking sites.

  • http://loveisdope.wordpress.com Demetria Irwin

Like the other commenters said, I meant that he would have surly gone to prison had he hurt or killed the man. Let me re-word that so that is clearer.

The Boys & Girls Club really needs to do a more thorough background search on their employees. When I was in the B&GC back in elementary school, our bus driver got caught trying to pick up prostitutes in the bright yellow B&GC bus!! (It was basically a school bus, mind you). It’s crazy because I thought this man was one of the funniest and coolest men I’d known. I didn’t think anything of it at the time because I was too young, but I could imagine how my mom felt.

But I really applaud this father for keeping his cool and not resorting to violence to take down this predator.

Now that 22-year-old man deserves a World Star Hip Hop flogging for using a community centre to prey on children.

    Huge kudos to the father!

This makes me smile! Bravo to the dad! And I love that he self-contained himself as well and looked objectively at the problem because many people in this situation wouldn’t be able to see straight and go in with the baser emotions…lol. But by doing so he did not only prevented a crime from happening to his daughter BUT other people’s daughters as well. This is truly good parenting and being a wonderful citizen.

Got it! Thanks and great article.

    Good for you Dad!

Not a good look for the Boys and Girls club.

  • Mademoiselle

This BETTER go viral! If abusive parenting can get hundreds of thousands of views, EFFECTIVE PARENTING should be able to go five times as far.

  • Kay

Wow. I can’t believe this man was affiliated with the Boys and Girls club. It’s scary and means you really have to look at what people around your child are doing and what their intentions may be. But the dad did a great job of looking out for his daughter.

  • Shirl

    YES!!!

  • Shirl

I just got a mental picture of that fool driving down the strip in a big yellow bus…His dumb ass wanted to get caught huh? I know this is not funny but…

    Sorry! I meant to like.

    GO DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anthony

I’m so happy this father was not operating with a street corner definition of manhood.
He made sure that there was no doubt who the real criminal was in his case by his intelligent reaction to a horrible threat to his family.

  • Tiffany

Applaud this man!! Im happy he didnt shoot the suspect but i sure hope he gave a guy a couple of knocks off camera before the police arrived

  • au napptural

WOW! I admire this guy’s restraint. I was at church (CHURCH!) and this old ass man says to my size zero, 13-year-old sister, “Hey shorty,” with a big ol’ leer on his face. When I told my father he was about to lay hands in a very unspiritual manner, in the parking lot. If someone actually sent one of us an unwelcome sexual message he would kill that person, no questions asked. This guy has my respect, it’s hard to remain calm under that kind of stress.

THIS is the sign of a good father. He didn’t have to beat the hell out of his daughter with extension cables.

  • April

Hats off to this man for protecting his child! And I really hope the Boys and Girls Club will use this incident as an opportunity to start paying closer attention to the people who work for them, because the fact that the girl met him there is REALLY scary.

  • cupcakes and shiraz

What an excellent father! This is how you do parenting.
