Tyler Perry's shows on OWN

My relationship to Tyler Perry’s work is complicated. On one hand I love that he gives so many black actors much-need work, and on the other, I’m constantly frustrated by his predictable storylines and problematic depictions of black women.

But it doesn’t really matter what I think; Mama O loves her some Tyler Perry and has teamed up with the filmmaker for two new scripted shows for OWN.

On May 28 and 29, The Haves and the Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor will premiere, and Oprah hopes Perry can continue to help her boost her network’s ratings.

And from the looks of things…I can’t call it.

The Haves and the Have Nots is a soap operay drama fueled by an interracial affair (hello, Scandal?) and a woman who uses sex and deception to con her way to the top, while Love Thy Neighbor appears to be a vintage Perry production starring Mama Hattie and ‘nem.

Take a look at a sneak peek of both shows below and tell us what you think!

The Haves and the Have Nots

Love Thy Neighbor

Just when I was about to start watching Downton Abbey, Tyler Perry gives me this. I’ll tune in to both!

  • Lauren

No. No. No. NO. WHY does he insist on cooning? WHY? I have NEVER been so offended in my life–and I’ve heard a white man talk about how he once called a guy the n-word because “he was acting like one.”

    No. Not okay. NEVER OKAY.

    NO.

  • kelly

  • Nadell

I can’t deal with Love Thy Neighbor….just NO!
But The Haves and Have Nots looks veerrry interesting! I’ll tune it for this one!

The Haves and the Haves Not look like a soap. Ya’ll know ya’ll watch that fakeness. Why not at least give this one a chance. We’ll see. Sometimes his trailers don’t do it justice and sometimes they do. I give all shows that give black actors and actresses a job a chance. They get one episode though.

    No.

Could she not find anyone else to write/direct/produce?

  • V

Both these shows look like CRAP. The first one is a typical Tyler perry film with a soap opera twist. A black woman with issues who goes against her Christian values n gets scolded by her doting mother. And the second Is Madia with a different wig and name. Won’t catch me watching!

  • BeanBean

Umm, I support black actors working, but I’m not watching this. To me this looks like a bootleg dramatic Downton Abey. I want to see blacks acting our original stories, not half-hashing a successful white story.

  • Joy

Becca since it appears you think it’s so easy why don’t you write/direct/produce?

  • Joy

Yes on Haves and Have Nots. No on Neighbors

  • Keshia

I’m really surprised Oprah takes anything Tyler perry does seriously smh

  • http://elegantblackwoman.blogspot.com Elegance

LOL what do you mean you have “the right?” Entitled much?

  • http://www.facebook.com/weebey.brice.94 Malik Hemmans

the doting mother is going to say something like “child that man is gon’ hurt you”

  • LMO85

UGH. Just sooooooo disappointed in O for this partnership. I get it, TP has a built in lame azz audience but dayum. Just…UGH. Calling all Black writers and directors–PLEASE get thyself to OWN/Hollywood, etc. pronto.

  • Sandy

I felt the same way when I watched the trailer- heck I feel the same way whenever I watch his movies. As a black director, Tyler has a huge opportunity to portray black people positively but he’s constantly reinforcing negative stereotypes about black women. So essentially, one of these dramas is about a black Jezebel who can’t get enough of sex (& if you watched his movie Temptations, you know she’s definitely going to be punished in the end, lol) & the other drama is about a Mamie who’s only good to be mocked at? Total disappointment he’s turning out to be.

  • mEE

oh the only three female characters that exist within a Tyler Perry production: the harlot, the religious zealot mammy, and the sassy older woman. …no thank you.

I was just about to say that I might give The haves and hav nots a chance (mainly because I love Tika) but Love Thy Neighbor is a no for me.

  • Sarah

But it is black women job to say no to these degrading roles and demand better from black directors and Hollywood. When you have black women accepting roles as maids, baby mommas, mistresses and other stereotypical roles that is what they are going to keep giving us.

my family and i like every thing tyler perry produce he is so very very smart, he is a hard working man and he believe in working all people small and great. God Bless Tyler Perry. because he wont forget who he is or where he comes from so stop hating on this man.,

God and Tyler Perry have nothing to do with each other. God doesn’t condone that type of foolishness. Material and worldly success is not necessarily a blessing it can be a curse.
