Gospel super-duo Mary Mary was tapped for Ebony’s June 2013 cover. The issue celebrates the tradition of black music, but Erica and Tina Campbell are sharing more than their love for gospel in the feature. The Campbell sisters candidly tackle infidelity, going solo and more in their interview.
Tina – the outspoken and bold sister – has a cover-line worth gasping at. Underneath the revealed image of the ladies on the cover is “Tina: How I forgave my husband after his affair.” Tina’s spouse Teddy cheated on her.
“Once I became aware [of the affair], I initially wanted to kill my husband,” she said. “I was considering adjusting the will, the living trust and all that kind of stuff. I did physically try to stab him. Several times…I never got to the point of physical harm, not really, but my words…My words hurt.”
Tina and her husband have reconciled. The couple married in 2000 and had their fifth child, Santana, in 2012. Her husband’s decision to cheat prompted Tina to focus on her family rather than music. Erica has decided to pursue a solo career in Tina’s absence. Her decision will also be highlighted in the story as well as how God has guided her career and her marriage.
“I feel like my husband has been called to minister,” Erica explained. “Now I said, ‘Lord, when I first started dating this guy he worked for Death Row Records, but he was from the church. That was a perfect combination for me: a little street, a little church.”
Both songstresses also tackle the criticism they’ve received for participating in reality television. Their sisters’ smash WEtv series has exposed their popular music and divergent personalities to wider audiences. WEtv has renewed the show for a third season and Erica and Tina Campbell will be using the platform to highlight their solo projects.
The Ebony issue hits stands May 7.
