Lolo Jones is in the news again for making offensive remarks. The Olympian hurdler, who also ruffled feathers for insensitive tweets toward a quadriplegic athlete and about a gun-shooting competition in the wake of the Aurora tragedy, had choice words for the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation.
In a satirical Vine video that has since gone viral, Lolo addresses a check for $741.84 that she received from the federation. She picks up the phone and jokingly quips: “I’m going to be a little bit late on my rent.”
Her video is being seen as an insult to the bobsledding community, who take issue with her assertion that their meager checks can’t even keep a roof over her head. In response, Lolo is insisting the video was a harmless joke and trying to clear the air with her teammates, who she says never “took offense.”
Whether her peers gave her grief of the video or not, the controversial joke is just another misstep in a long string of PR nightmares for the athlete. The sheer volume of incidents like this one is making naysayers question whether Lolo Jones is just woefully unaware of the impact of her insensitive jokes or if she simply craves the attention.
