I remember my little cousin and her obsession with everything Hannah Montana. There were times when I had to babysit her and suffer through back to back marathons on TV, but I did it because it was a “cute” show and it kept her from running around the house like a chicken with her head cut off.  That cousin of mine is now 16. And some would call her ratchet.  It doesn’t matter that she has never lived anywhere but in a suburb of Maryland, but she if she were to tell it, she’s ghetto fabulous.

I guess she now has something in common with Miley Cyrus, after all.

miley

Gold grills.

Twerking.

Weed smoking.

Miley has thrown away the good girl image she embodied in her earlier years and have gone full throttle ratchet. Just take a look at her most recent video below:

At the age of 20, Miley seems to think she’s ‘found herself’.  Yes, found herself in a world of hot ass mess.

Some may call Miley’s new found image cultural appropriation and her use of black people as “props” a bit over the top. Dodai Stewart from Jezebel writes:

“Miley seems to delight in dancing much like these strippers do: Twerking, popping the ass, bending at the waist and shaking her rump in the air. Fun. But basically, she, as a rich white woman, is “playing” at being a minority specifically from a lower socio-economic level. Along with the gold grill and some hand gestures, Miley straight-up appropriates the accouterments associated with certain black people on the fringes of society.”

What do you think, Clutchettes? It’s open thread time. Do you think Miley is appropriating black culture?

I thought it was very Rihanna-ish. Robin Thicke & Justin Timberlake embrace the “black” sound (if that’s what you want to call it) I guess the difference is she’s twerking & they’re not?

I think she wants to get as far away from the innocent Hannah Montanna image as she possibly can. Whatever she has to do to shed that image, she’s going to do it.
