It looks the Oprah Winfrey Network has finally found its stride. After the success of “The Haves and Have Nots,” which enjoyed OWN’s highest-rated debut with 1.8 million viewers, the network is making a play to appeal to the soap opera-loving crowd by picking up “All My Children” and “One Life To Live.”

OWN has acquired the first 40 episodes of both soaps and will air them for a 10-week run this summer. Erik Logan, one of OWN’s presidents, told The Hollywood Reporter:

“These shows have proven to be very popular with a significant, loyal fan base, not to mention Oprah herself is a big fan. Many of our viewers across numerous platforms have expressed their passion for the soaps so we are especially excited to air this limited engagement on OWN.”

OWN will continue to cater to the same passionate niche audience with “The Haves and Have Nots.” The network ordered 16 more episodes of the drama, which brings the episode tally to 32. The first run of 16 will end on September 3rd, and the second half will premiere early next year.

What do you think of the direction OWN is going in Clutchettes?

I’m a little slow. Is she continuing All My Children or ordering re-runs?

  • Writerdiva

I think she’s continuing AMC because they, along with OLTL halted production. Prospect Park and the soaps are having contract and production issues.

  • Who’sthatGirl

Oprah just made me so happy. I grew-up watching “All My Children”. AMC is my favorite soap opera.

  • memyselfandi

Actually, they worked out the contract issues – both shows are back in production on August 12th as planned. She’s ordering re-runs of the first 40 episodes. I assume if they do well she may continue airing the shows either as re-runs or first-runs.

I actually like The Haves and Have Nots, but I don’t like Love Thy Neighbor. So I’m glad that OWN is finding it’s niche. Maybe they will add MORE scripted shows featuring black women and men that are different from the other shows that were and are currently out. Like Awkward Black Girl.

  • Common Sense

Bad move on picking up One Life To Live. The woman who played Vickie, Erika Slezak is a racist. Back in the day she was not happy with having black characters on the show. She felt having blacks on the show made it less “special” so to speak. I read that in “Carla’s” autobiography. Carla was the wife of the police lieutenant.

    I wouldn’t pay her a dime!!!!

  • C’mon Son

Oprah is smart as fucking hell. Love her to bits!!!!

  • stanhope

Well it took her long enough. I guess better late than never. She should have had All My Children from the onset. At their lowest they had more viewers than OWN’s highest rated show. The collaboration with Tyler Perry was a good one too. The Haves and Have Nots is brilliant.
