The man behind Fruitvale Station is back in the director’s chair — and he’s hopefully bringing his main man with him for a new project.
MGM has asked Ryan Coogler to direct a Rocky spinoff titled Creed. They are also in talks with Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan to play the grandson of Apollo Creed in the extended Rocky saga. Sylvester Stallone will return to the silver screen to play Rocky Balboa as a retired fighter-turned-trainer.
The decisions for the project didn’t come about by surprise. Coogler mentioned that a film like Creed would be a dream project when he initially signed with WME. The agency helped connect him with Stallone, who is currently working on a stage musical of the 1976 version of Rocky. When Stallone hear the idea, he loved it. Together the two met with MGM executives who approved the project.
The original men behind Rocky, Irwin Winkler and Robert Cartoff, will produce the film along with Stallone and Kevin King.
