Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Just in time for Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday, the full trailer for the upcoming biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” has hit the web.

Based on Mandela’s writing, the film stars Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, and South African stars Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Zolani Mkiva, Jamie Bartlett, Lindiwe Matshikiza, Deon Lotz and Terry Pheto.

“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” hits theaters November 29, just in time for Oscar consideration. The Weinstein Company hopes the film will garner several nominations, and many are already talking about Elba earning a Best Actor nod for his portrayal of South Africa’s first democratically elected president.

Although there have been several films that have told Mandela’s story, as Tambay Obenson of Shadow and Act points out, most have paired the famed leader along side a white male character. This time, Mandela’s story appears to depicted as it should be: on its own.

The film will cover Madiba’s early years, his rise as an anti-apartheid activist, and his years of imprisonment.

Check out the trailer for “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” Will you see it when it’s released?

I love that Naomie is playing Winnie. I’m going to support this film. Besides who doesn’t love Idris?

  • Anthony

Idris Elba did a great job with Mandela’s accent, but I really wish that the producers had looked at South African talent for this project. South Africa has many many talented actors and musicians. They could bring a level of complexity to this story than a foreigner ever could.

They need an international name for the main characters in order to sell tickets. It appears that they sourced plenty of local talent for the other roles.

  • Fatima

    Yaaaasssss!! Can’t wait!

  • Nadell

    @ marion
And that is why Zoe Saldana gets to play Nina Simone.
    @ Anthony
    I agree.

I understand the rationale, but imagine what it would be like if King or Malcolm X could never be portrayed by an African American? I think that a company willing to put some money behind a project could bring about a breakthrough for South African actors.

  • IjusWannaSay…

While i agree that they could have found a couple of SA actors to play the roles, I look forward to watching Naomie portray Winnie.

I think Idris will do a great job portraying Mandela. I look forward to this movie.

    OMG, Idris. *faints*

But yes i will see it. I love how many movies have been/will be coming out about our history… Strong movies too, and great tv shows with strong black Female leads.. Hopefully hollywood will be paying attention to see it..

Obviously you nothing about business, who wants to see a no name South African actor play Nelson Mandela ? Idris Elba is an international actor. People would come out to see him and the film producers make more money
