Amber Riley

Do you know about Amber Riley? Yeah, yeah, she’s an amazing singer and successful actress on Glee. But do you know what an awesome role model she is for all of us that want a little more body confidence?

We rounded up some of Riley’s best body love comments, in case you needed an extra shot of size acceptance today.

1) “I dislike my gut, but who wouldn’t want ripped abs?” Riley told People magazine in 2010. “I love my breasts, my face, my butt…I love myself.”

The takeaway: You don’t have to love every part of your body to have body confidence and work towards acceptance.

2) “I’m not going to conform, and hurt myself, and do something crazy to be a size 2,” Riley told MTV. “My parents always instilled knowing that you’re beautiful, that you’re fearfully and wonderfully made, and that you know who you are.”

The takeaway: Your parents may not have given you the same lessons, but it’s never too late to learn how to accept and (maybe even) appreciate your size and shape.

3) “‘I’ve always been comfortable with my size. I just decided it was time to get healthy,” Riley told People magazine after dropping a few pounds.

The takeaway: Even if you are trying to lose weight, there are ways to honor the body you have.

 4) “I never wanted to play a character that hated herself. I wanted people to know that those aren’t the only roles for people like me, normal girls,” Riley said on MTV’s “This Is How I Made It.”

The takeaway: Society assigns us roles based on how we look and our body size, but we don’t have to accept them.

but didn’t she pass out due to her diet?

  • laughoften

no… she even addressed that before the rumors could start… but i guess it didn’t work and people will just make things up as they go.

I like Ms. Riley she seems like such a nice girl. I’m happy she likes herself even thought she may want to change some things.

I appreciate she dresses appropriate to her size. I don’t care how much you weigh, nothing accentuates your body better than actually wearing clothes that are appropriate for your body type.

“3) “‘I’ve always been comfortable with my size. I just decided it was time to get healthy,” Riley told People magazine after dropping a few pounds.

The takeaway: Even if you are trying to lose weight, there are ways to honor the body you have”

This one is very hard for people to understand. Some think you must be a one digit size in order to be healthy and that’s not necessarily true. If you are overweight and make the decision to get at least 90 min. of exercise daily and eat more fruits and veggies instead of fats and sugary foods, yes you will lose weight. But you won’t necessarily get down to what society thinks is an acceptable size for a woman. We have to be true to ourselves about our genetic makeup (DNA does play a strong part in determining body frame and type). One’s body frame may be larger or smaller than another’s. Be happy and don’t be afraid to live abundantly regardless of what weight or size you are. But, also realize that a healthy diet and exercise are part of self love and respect. It’s a fine balance

lol, at her bold proclamations. Is she the new Monique for overweight black women? When is the last time you all seen her out in public with a man, or in a movie or on a TV show as the love interest of a man? She’ll drop the weight sooner or later especially in the industry she’s in. I know she’s on dancing with the stars. I want to see if her dancing partner, a little white man, is going to try to pick her up. lol I’ll be okay with young fat black female actresses and singers when 40% of White, Asian and Hispanic women on TV or singing are also overweight.

I’m seeing a transitioning or re-imaging of black women going on in the entertainment industry. Black women should be happy about that and want to get away from those dreadful asexual mammy characters that Hollywood has had black women playing for the last 70 years. Young fat black girls is really something new in the black community. Previously, black women didn’t start gaining weight until they were married and had kids. Sorry, but young fat black women is just not in fashion anymore. There are going to be some winners and losers because of it. Personally, I think it’s a win for the black community.

  • Velociraptor

Your last sentence contradicts your entire post. Not be insulting at all because I hate trolls but…

    1) There have been plenty of black actresses in the last ten years who don’t have typical body types, however they still have a love interest
    - Queen Latifah (Common in Just Wright and LL Cool J in Last Holiday)

    2) “When is the last time you all seen her out in public with a man, or in a movie or on a TV show as the love interest of a man?” I’m not sure what this has to do with anything. Feel free to elaborate. I personally don’t know her so I’m not sure what her inner circle of friends or significant others look like. Then again, gossip mags and paparazzi aren’t concerned about black entertainers unless they’re in the middle of a scandal or on a reality show.

    3) “I’m seeing a transitioning or re-imaging of black women going on in the entertainment industry. Black women should be happy about that and want to get away from those dreadful asexual mammy characters.” Aside from “The Help” and other psuedo-biographical movies or Tyler Perry films, Hollywood has been improving roles offered to black actresses for a while now… I’d support the black independent film industry if you would like to see more of us play multifaceted roles.

4)”Sorry, but young fat black women is just not in fashion anymore.” I don’t think she’s trying to make obesity en Vogue.

YESSSSS!! Also, I know people who are the acceptable society size who are in horrible health (HBP, Diabetes… etc) but your message is spot on! I love it!

  • laughoften

What are you even talking about? She had several love interests on the show she was on for 4 years…One of the actors picked her up during a dance sequence in the first season. like… do you even know who this woman is?! She’s never encouraged women to be larger than is healthy for them.

“Be happy and don’t be afraid to live abundantly regardless of what weight or size you are. But, also realize that a healthy diet and exercise are part of self love and respect. ” perfect!

The majority of lack women are suffering from diabetes, hypertension, treatable illnesses and all we are busy doing is applauding women who are proud of being obese. Come one folks. Let’s do better. I know I have 20 more to lose and I lose 40 already. How? By having the courage to stop lying to myself and saying how much I loved my body overweight and spending all this money buying great plus size clothes. Once I stopped that nonsense, my cholesterol went down and I lost 40 pounds. Wake up sisters! Obese is not good. Never. Now when I go home to family and boy they love to cook some starch, I say no. I bring my veggies (steamed) because being overweight is not attractive or healthy.

  • Veda

    love her!!!

  • LadyShabazz

I think there’s a difference between encouraging obesity and being proud of who you are. I simply think she’s proud of her size all the while still understanding the importance of being healthy. Just because someone is medically obese doesn’t mean they’re unhealthy. Some people really just are bigger. All the people I know with high cholesterol and other related diseases are skinny.. So you might want to re-think what it is you’re exactly trying to say.

  • Shelly

These days, it’s not about living by what is logical. we now live by doing what makes us feel comfortable, whether it’s bad for us or not. think about it…there are other instances where people say “they are just accepting themselves for who they are” instead of looking at the big picture.
