Being Mary Jane, BET’s first original scripted drama now has a launch date . The  series will debut on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. and a first look clip is below.

The film and series is created by Mara Brock Akil (The Game) and follows the life of Mary Jane Paul (Gabrielle Union) an independent and successful TV news anchor who is struggling to balance life, love, career and family.

Best show! Love it so much! Can’t wait. Not to compare the two but love this so much better than Scandal. Feels more real to me. Gabrielle should be nominated for an Emmy!

How can this possibly be BET’s first original scripted drama? I hope it’s good. Love Gabrielle’s outfit, she looks great!

I really didn’t think BET would pull it off when I first heard about Being Mary Jane but the movie was good. I hope the TV show does well because I want to see black actors flourish.

We don’t need another show like this! Another strong, independent type character?? Isn’t Scandal enough?? This portrayal of black women gets in the minds of black women and they just run with it….the whole strong independent mindset, making black women NOT marriage material, or un-dateable. Now, if Union played a character more like Claire Huxtable or something, I wouldn’t have anything to say. Show different sides to black women—PLEASE! This is why black people should create their OWN networks, instead of having their hand out to the white man, or trying to appear “equal.” And I’m done.
