Food stamp recipients ran for gold at a Wal-Mart store in Springhill and Mansfield, Louisiana Saturday after a computer glitch allowed benefit cardholders to have unlimited purchasing power.
Entire shelves were emptied between the hours of 7am and 9pm and police were brought into to control the madness until the glitch was fixed, KSLA-TV reported.
“Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Wal-Mart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Wal-Mart was so packed, ‘it was worse than any black Friday’ that he’s ever seen.”
The station reported that the police chief said that when the cards stopped showing limits a call was made to Wal-Mart’s corporate office. Executives told the store managers to let the consumers use the cards anyway. The officer also stated that when an announcement was made that the glitch was fixed, people abandoned entire carts of food in store aisles.
No arrests were made during the incident.
