The family of Jack Lamar Roberson said that they watched police shoot and kill him even though Roberson had been unarmed with his hands up. The incident occurred in Waycross, Georgia.
Roberson’s fiancée had apparently called 9-1-1 on Friday, October 4th when she feared that Roberson would become suicidal after taking his diabetes medication, the Florida Times-Union reported. She called for an ambulance, but two officers arrived at the residence instead. The Waycross Police department said that they had received a report about an attempted suicide and that Roberson had become aggressive with them, First Coast News reported. What ensued after the emergency phone call differs on both sides.
The police chief said that Roberson lunged at an officer with two objects that they believed to be weapons. He allegedly ignored the officers’ requests to drop the items. The officers claim that Roberson raised on of the “weapons in a threatening manner”, which caused them to fire their gun at him.
However, Diane Roberson, Jack’s mother asserts that the police are lying.
“We had no weapons in this house whatsoever,’’ she said. “My gentle lamb … He kissed me every morning, made me breakfast in bed, and they said he had two weapons.”
The two officers that were allegedly involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, the Athens Banner-Herald reported. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the case.
